How are IQ tests relevant to real life?

I had it professionally administered some time ago, and I just don't see the connection. I'm almost never going to calculate things in my head, and why would I need to know the definition of a 'tirade'?

I would imagine it comes under the heading of fun things to know for most people. I was tested 3 times (job related) along with psychological evaluation (periodically) and polygraph on demand (tons of times). They were looking for changes over time to exclude those who may no longer be able to do the job for a range of reasons, assigning leaders and followers, problem solving ability, persistence, performance under stress, etc. All three of my tests were clustered pretty close at 133, 137, 143 in chronological order. So it was at least fairly consistent in the results. LOL, I don't think I got any smarter. Just an "any given day" thing, getting familiar, lucking out on a few exercises.

All of that is probably helpful. But you're dealing with the human mind. It's not like math where 4X5=20 every time. There is always a subjective element, social and gender bias, age, health, experience, stress, etc. It's more like a slightly unreliable compass than a precision pressure gauge.

There are some cases where they can be helping in real life. But I think mostly they are helpful in education to help teachers know what they are dealing with. They could also give students an idea of what they may be good at. That might help them make choices for their future.

I had a cheap intelligence test when I first started in engineering. They wanted to see if I could do the work. It was an intelligence test but not an IQ test. A true IQ test needs to be taken by very large numbers of people to be meaningful.

they use it to predict success or to see if you might have a disorder (really the only reason to take it for most people bc its expensive)

it isn't something to 100% take to heart, but its the best metric we have atm

It isn't. Mine is 140 and it isn't helpful at all. It took me a long time to learn how to deal with it. It's a hindrance more than anything
