Has anything changed much in 800 years of English history?

I'm just reading some history of Henry III, king of England between 1207-1272. One of Henry's contemporaries, Matthew Paris, describes him below. It got me thinking, if we change the word King to Keir Starmer or some other puppet of the political class, it seems to sum up the country's current problems just as well.

"Moreover the king [Keir Starmer] was reproached with advancing and enriching the interests of all foreigners, and with despising and pillaging his own natural subjects, to the ruin of the whole kingdom... he was so needy, whilst others possessed money in abundance, that he could not, for want of money, recover the rights of the kingdom, nay, that he could not even check the injurious incursions of the Welsh, who were the very scum of mankind."
