Seems to me, people in the poorest areas, with the least power... stand a good chance of suffering...
What to do about that?
My crops are growing pretty good this year. I'm not trying to feed you at an industrial scale, but my belly is full as is my pantry and my fields are growing more food right now. I have months of calories already in the ground, I just have to dig them up if I get hungry and I can always make more. If you are hungry it seems like you should get to work. I garden 5-6 days a week after I do my day job. I'm not concerned about fertilizer either, because 1) I grow nitrogen fixing green manure crops like Mexican sunflower that I chop and drop to feed my own plants, 2) I ferment weeds and vegetable/fruit scraps like the Koreans in a garbage can with water to make liquid fertilizer that we call swamp juice here in Florida, and 3) the ocean pushes literal tons of Sargassum seaweed up on the beach from June to October that I can go pick up with a pitch fork and a bin for free whenever I go to the beach. So long as I'm not a lazy shit there is always food to eat.

Sargassum has high amounts of potassium, nitrogen, calcium, and obviously sodium since it comes out of the ocean. So it’s always good to rinse off the salt. If your plants are somewhat salt tolerant you can just mulch with the stuff. Otherwise compost it first. It also has magnesium to a lower extent but still a significant amount. It has trace amounts of zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium
I also burn a lot of tree trimmings from my property in my fire pit. It’s nice to hang out under the stars at night by the fire and have a beer. There is a never ending supply of palm fronds, fallen oak branches, pruned tree limbs from managing fruit trees, etc. So I end up burning a lot of debris in the fire pit which gives me charcoal (biochar) and wood ash which is high in potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
Mexican sunflower is very high in nitrogen, but also mines a significant amount of potassium and to a lesser extent phosphorus.
Purple napier grass is another major chop and drop green manure that I grow. It’s high in potassium and nitrogen and also mines to a lesser extent calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, sodium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, silica.

I also grow moringa which is high in nitrogen, calcium, potassium, and to a lesser extent iron, magnesium and other trace minerals like manganese zinc, copper, chromium, and selenium. So if it’s growing out of control and I have not other use for it, then I use it as a green manuer.
I also grow an assortment of nitrogen fixing support plants like perennial peanut, sunshine mimosa, pigeon pea, etc.
Florida it self is created from ancient marine sediments so there tends to be enough phosphate in the soil most times.
Water from the Floridan aquifer that shoots out of the ground from my artesian wells on my property without electricity also has calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, sodium, chlorine, etc. in it before I filter it so I just water crops with that.
When you look at what macro and micro nutrients plants need I’m easy getting almost everything. So long as I maintain my property I don’t really have to bring in fertilizer. I’m not against using chemical fertilizer to give something a boost or against bringing in organic compost which is relatively cheap in the area or bringing in wood chips from tree services that want to dump them, but I don’t depend on it. It’s just extra if the opportunity is there.
I feel bad for the rest of the planet. But I have zero sympathy for US farmers or the poor white filth who voted for a career criminal with severe mental health problems to unleash chaos on the USA.

For the most part in the West farming is so efficient I don't think will deal with many shortages. Prices will probably go up. Farmers across Europe have been taking to the streets because of climate change restrictions. Honestly I think most people are distant from agriculture people don't even think about farmers anymore

Food is plentiful in California. The grocery stores are full. And my wife and I live in an area where there are small, organic farms. Lots of people have chickens and sell eggs. There are local farms that raise organic, grass fed beef and lamb and pasture-raised chicken.
My wife and I also grow some our food. We have a small orchard with a variety of fruit. We grow herbs and veggies.
That sounds healthy... and your seasons are long right? You don't get 5 months of freezing cold like New England?

As for myself: Here in Thailand farmers are used to being poor. There are a few superfarms that do well through corruption contacts in the government. Food is there in sufficient quantity, though.

I am German, but living in Thailand 🙂. The typical private farmer does not own too much land. So they don't need big machinery. Instead, there often are even more poor farmhands... often from Laos or Cambodia. Personally, I enjoy that local food from nearby usually is not overloaded with chemicals, hormomes and such.
Farmers in USA are not struggling they're being bought out the government is buying them out so they don't plant food and as for pesticides we have too much of pesticides on all of our products so much now that when you buy something from the store it has a code bar on it in the first number in that code bar tells you how much pesticides is on it that's why people in America are so sick because of the pesticides and you don't need pesticides to keep bugs away from your plants there's a simple trick with copper and zinc that you can do to make your plants grow healthier and keep the bugs out of your garden your land your property but I agree with you there is something there is an agenda that is happening little by little but we will get there and it's going to be bad like you said

Some pay pre-war prices and the rest pay higher prices or swap to growing something that requires less fertilizer.
Europe is not going to run out of fertilizer per se but higher demand globally and higher production costs increase the price. That plus higher diesel prices will be visible later in the prices of this years harvest.

Australia feeds a large part of Asia so if our crops are down wrt normal years there will be more consequence than to to just us. I imagine the same applies to US farmers.

Sometimes there are certain things in the supermarket that are hard to find. Lettuce is one item that either looks really bad or else there is none. I suppose it is hard to find illegal aliens to pick them. Otherwise there has not been the supply chain issues that we had when Biden was president.

Food is so abundant in the USA that we actually waste nearly half of what is grown every year, and we're still the largest global exporter of food if I remember right, though that is trending down in recent decades.
Yes, I checked Google AI and the USA is the world's largest food exporter. This in spite of the fact that we literally waste half our food crop, AND WE BURN over half of our corn crop as Ethanol every year, which is a completely foolish waste of good food. If we weren't burning food as Ethanol, then the price of animal feed would be lower and that would in turn lower the price of beef and pork and chicken at the grocery market.
Low IQ arias might suffer but they were anyway. Some people you'd have to take a spoon and feed them practically. Africa is a good example of this.
