I think these originated in Poland but looking on Google they also exist in Canada and parts of the UK and no doubt other countries.
Basically shops and restaurants or the public leave food in them and you just help yourself for free. The idea is it reduces food waste while helping the poor. Also by being self service there's no judgement.
I could see an issue if someone wanted to poison people and I'm sure a few are going to bitch it's commie and the poor should starve. But what's your opinion?
They exist in Florida just without all the socialist propaganda. It very common to have community fridges and charity pantries that are run by religious groups. That's the difference between the city and rural areas. Rural areas believe in personal charity to support your community out of the kindness of your heart, were as cities are filled with socialists that believe you have to tax everyone to death and steal from your neighbor but are never willing to be charitable at all, then take part of that tax to set up a small grocery store with limited service and supply, and then launder like 90% of the taxed money into the pockets of socialist politicians so that they can live in mansions and have nice boats and ride around in luxury cars and finance riots to burn down the city and loot honest hard working people. When they chant "No Kings", what they really mean is that they don't have a king yet and they are working on setting one up.
In USA, terrible idea. Our animals are poorly trained. Dogs are trained better. It be a disaster. If dnot' believe me, get a job in usa where they have a common fridge and see what happens.
I bet Mayor Mandami starts doing this and will be exciting to see. A lot of food is wasted. But if you have evern 2% of rats running around in your house, that is a lot of rats which will destroy the place for everyone. That's the problem.
In Canada, a lot of rich people making over 100,000 a year use food banks because they are stingy, so over half of them ask for evidence you are in financial need before they let you take free food from them. They ask for things like, copies of your bank statements, statement of unemployment, or statement of disability. When my churches gave sandwiches to homeless people, they would never announce ahead of time that they were coming.
Sounds like a good idea. In partnership with ordinary food banks, it should help many poorer families. The downside is that people will take food whten they really don"t need it.
There is also a need that many people ignore. In our nearby town, in UK, there is a food bank for animals. My mum regularly puts in cat and dog food to help others keep their pets.
Community fridges are a beautiful idea when managed well 🍎
They rescue surplus food, support people quietly, and build a sense of shared care. In Lisbon, I once used a community fridge near a bakery; leftover pão de Deus and sandwiches vanished within an hour, mostly to students and delivery workers.
Key is hygiene, clear rules, and some volunteer oversight. Risks exist, but with coordination they stay minimal compared to the benefits.
maybe this could Work in Poland, I bet it could work in Japan, but no way it could work in the US. Unless it was part of a church or in a small town setting. I'm surprised they do it in the UK. Maybe it could work in the country side, but put it in white chapel and it would be empty in seconds XD
That’s the way it should be. When the people who can contribute do, those who can’t don’t get taxed into the poorhouse. It’s also real support. Handing an indigent person money often means that they’ll waste it on booze or drugs instead of food and water. My main concern would be people taking advantage who don’t really need the help. I guess that can’t really be helped, and if the people and organizations donating don’t care… why should i?
Community fridges: the idea seems nice to me, and interesting. A way indeed to help people in need, and a way to avoid wasting food. On the practical side, there may be problems with some indelicate people, which means someone needs to keep an eye regularly on the involved fridges and public pantries if any.
In normal societies yes, however those societies become rare. This a game that won't work in multiculti opportunism where exploiting such opportunities turns out to be a moral obligation.
I've been many times to Poland & Canada and have NEVER seen this. It seems good for homeless people, but I wouldn't eat anything from there personally. You don't know where that food's been, or if someone did something to it
In a high trust society they are a great idea. In a low trust society they are a poisoning waiting to happen. Perhaps some cameras would help keep it safe.
It's not an ideal system. Better to allow people to buy food at a reasonable price. Free stuff doesn't always go to the people who need it most. Ans that's true of any kind of aid.
I have never seen community refrigerators in England; instead, we have community pantries.

We have a program at the local hospital where they have boxes outside like this, for non perishable, im glad they do... I've never needed them, but nobody should starve, especially kiddos
They have non perishable versions of this at various churches around where I live. There was a time I was eating out of there. Surprising amount of junk food it was kinda awesome.
Never seen one , but I guess the idea makes good sense , they have cheap rooms here with no refrigerator., as those people generally buy made on the strip or grab food delivery , it's not uncommon.
