They're North Mediterranean so sun tanned Europeans and thus closer to that culture and ethnicity than others

They are actually closer to Armenian people Jews and Persians than most Europeans.

I wouldn't class them as Asians though in spite of the skin tone because they have the tall noses and straight hair that is Greek or Roman in nature.
