Idiot in Portugal wanted to know why Portugal had so much "renewables" while the USA who invented the technology does not use much renewablles.

the answer is wind turbines and solar panels are NOT sufficient for the extreme climate of the USA. They get covered in snow in winter. They get destroyed by hail storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes, which Portugal does not get anywhere near the severe storms of the USA and has never been hit by a hurricane.

** Put solar panels into cities with the least sunlight so you can get the least return on investment.

** Put in wind farms and then discover the whole East coast of Australia can be in a calm for 12 hours at a time with nothing being generated. No you can't compensate with solar panels because calms can happen at night too. What ever you do don't collect all met wind data and model for calms.

** Discover on the fly, that after an extended calm and an interconnect failure that it is really hard to synch up a myriad of solar panel and wind generators and it takes about 5 days to boot up.

Buy the world's largest battery to make it a bit easier next time.

** After establishing by trial and error, that a myriad of wind farms can all be in a calm at the same, start boosting off shore as the next big thing. Don't go out and measure the wind or even collect the met data from ships, cause that might ruin the bubble and disturb tax payers girding up to chuck more money.

** Around this time discover with great surprise that wind farms are a long way from ultra high voltage distribution line. Who would have thought that? Soak electricity consumers to pay for connecting lines.

** Never mention that the lifetime of a wind generator is 20 years, not the 50 years of a Beautiful Big Black coal fired power station. So before you have built out the renewable network you have to start rebuilding the renewables network. Suppress that sneaky suspicion you are never going to build out the renewables network.

** Just for fun and giggles, shut down coal fired before you have provisioned replacement. Watch the wholesale price triple in 15 minutes and yell very loudly it is coal fire that caused this. Remove the word withdrawing from withdrawing coal fire caused this.

Hydro-power will work if you can find a running river or something like that. Tidal power works, although not very well. Geological power will work if you can find a lava flow or something of that nature, or a steam vent of some sort. Solar power works, although the actual cost of building solar panels can become fairly prohibitive. When power works, no matter what the allegations here have been.

South Australian gov't want to be the first state to be totally on renewables. The had the nominal capacity but of course it is rarely generating at full capacity. So it was a lie and the gap between nominal capacity and actual generated electricity came from an interconnect with eastern states. OK they were bullshitting but all pollies BS.

I was interested enough though to check the MW generated. Found there were up to a week where no breeze turned the wind generators. Thought this will be interesting.

It got interesting because the Left shut down the last coal fired. At the next 7 day calm, they were drawing so much from the interconnect they blew it up. No electricity from the east any more.

The whole SA elecrical network was shut down. Calms don't last for ever so soon there was wind & power for every body. But it is wasn't a matter of plugging and away you go.

You see when a generator is connected it has to match the Voltage, frequency and phase EXACTLY as other wise large currents flow between generators. AC is a sinusoidal remember. It goes positive and negative. You don't want one generator to be positive whilst another is negative.

Within my state for example North of the Dividing Range has cloud cover 30% of the time whilst South has 70% cloud cover. There are a couple of deserts in the North. Funding decisions put solar panels under 70% cloud cover. Great for a public funds ROI :)

So right from the get go an enormous design decision was made on the most beneficial sites... by Left wing politicians.

CO2 is responsible for 0.6 Watts per meter squared forcing on the Earths 2m atmospheric temperature. The total net forcing ongoing over the past couple hundred years is actually in excess of 4 watts per meter squared and is NOT caused by man-made gases. Even if you add up all of the methane, nitrates, and halogens, that does not produce 4 watts of forcing.

Regardless of what Tree Huggers say, something else is causing the majority of the ongoing warming.

I could show you the math that proves this, if you like, although it's kind of clumsy when put into text on a chat forum. I know how to solve for the forcing of man-made portion of the CO2 in the past 200 years.

@goaded I actually know how to do the math that proves CO2 is NOT the primary culprit. It IS contributing, yes, but it contributes only about 15% of the total net warming. the rest is coming from Methane which is natural, Nitrates which are natural, Argon which is natural, Halogens, which are man-made, and Water Vapor, which is natural. There is also a certain portion coming from the positive Albedo Feedback.

An australian team proved a few years ago that the Deep Ocean is heating half as quickly as the Surface of the Ocean and the Atmosphere, this means the total net forcing is actually slightly above 4 Watts per meter squared. The value given by Google AI is a severe under-estimate. the climate is warming much faster than the so-called experts are predicting, and again, CO2 is only contributing about 15% of the total net warming.

I read an article just yesterday which suggests the Thwaits Glacier in Antarctica is about to collapse, and they forecast a THREE METER rise in global sea levels from that collapse alone. It looks like it is immenent too. It could happen at any time. That would be ON TOP OF the 48 to 72 inches of sea level rise I'm predicting by the year 2100 from the "mean sea level rise" of the warming I've discovered.

I tried to sue them over it, but couldn't get a lawyer to take the case, because I know good and damned well that anything worth 14,000 does not lose its entire value in one second flat, then I owe money, but then nobody else knows the difference.
