1 moBecause historically, independence was already expected from men, while women were often expected to depend on fathers or husbands financially and socially.
So when many women say “I’m independent,” they’re usually emphasizing:
financial self-sufficiency
autonomy
not needing a relationship for survival or identity.
For men, society has long treated independence as the default adult role, so men often don’t label themselves that way because it’s assumed.
That’s why a single man living on his own is often just seen as “a normal adult,” while women sometimes explicitly state independence because, historically and culturally, it carried different expectations and pressures.
It’s less about women uniquely valuing independence and more about the word having different social weight depending on gender and history.

1 moIt might have something to do with the fact that, up until a little over a hundred years ago, women were legally considered property and not people and weren’t really able to live completely on their own with their own home/apartment with their own jobs in any field and their own bank account in solely their name or a credit card until 1975. The fact that there are people who are still alive who can remember that means that influence is still present.

Shakespeare (who I am quoting) was a canny observer and doubtless noticed the fair sex were self-boosters. It is not uncommon for a girl to tell you for example she is really smart.
Guys would most unlikely to say that because self-boosting/boasting just gets a guy negative regard and some other guy will knock him down a peg or two. For a guy it is what other guys say about you that is important.
So I think this independent stuff is just typical female self-boosterism. Nothing much to see here.

m 1 moCould be because, in a traditional vision of gender roles, men are expected to be independent by default, so they can, in turn, be seen as providers picking up a traditional housewife? Calling themselves independent, in that case, would be redundant I think.

She calls herself independent because she is implying she doesn’t need a man to take care of her financially she supports herself and doesn't depend on anyone else to support her , me personally likes independent girls’ because they will work with you and not against you , they know what it takes to financially survive in this world today , this isn’t the old days when one income can support an entire family , unless the guy is rich and she can be a stay at home Mom , but unfortunately not everyone was born with a silver spoon in their hand and has to work for a living. When I get into a relationship with a girl I look for a partner not a user

"While it may seem hard to believe, women in the U. S. were not legally allowed to open bank accounts until the 1960s. And it wasn’t until 1974 that they were granted the ability to open credit cards in their own name, separate from their husbands. "

869 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. 50 ago women couldn't do simple things like rent a house or have their own bank account, 100 years ago they practically didn't have any rights. That's why some women say that. men never have been as a gender, dependent 2nd class citizens. I do think it's a bit cringy though when some women use that word, because most of the women saying that were born when women were independent and always knew relative gender equality.
01 Reply- 1 mo
That's false. SINGLE women could rent or buy a house and have their own bank account - it was married women who could not. And once you understand WHY they couldn't, it makes perfect sense.
Until laws were changed in the 70s, any and all debt that a married woman acquired was the responsibility of her husband. The wife could not legally be held responsible for that debt. All marital assets were in the man's name as were all debts. Keep in mind that it was the rare exception that the wife had significant assets coming into the marriage and that men were almost always the primary breadwinner and were often the exclusive breadwinner.
This system had major upsides for married women and few downsides. Look at the outcome: the average woman today has significantly more debt than the average man, and the interest on that debt destroys a lot of women's wealth.
But of course SINGLE woman could have bank accounts and rent or own property - and were responsible for their own debts. It's just that the vast majority of women were married.

1 moUmmmm... because almost every human society has been engineered from the start as a patriarchal structure to keep women subservient to and dependent on men. Men have traditionally been the only ones to benefit from property laws while women have not been allowed to own property and have in fact been treated as a man's property themselves. Men have been independent by default. Independence for women is a relatively new thing in western countries in the last 50-75 years.

Anonymous(25-29)1 moIt's the society,
If a guy pays his bills, lives alone, does job, and everything he is an adult because he is expected to do so. He is expected to fight his worth. If he is looking for love or not, if he has a family or not these are all metrics determine his ability of being an adult.
his freedom is just given without any 2nd thoughts.
If a girls earns, lives alone, does job , it's a harder life for her, constant questions on her ability to go on, single women is normally looked at very differently as she doesn't have any interest in love or relationship (many women who are successful and single aren't looking for it).
And women are considered adult as soon as they cross a certain age, so being called an average adult is not a big deal for them.
Have the right to say that they are independent as they are paying for the freedom, they had to earn there way to that life.
Where as freedom is a gift to a man and a pricetag for a women00 Reply470 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Because for a long time women weren’t really allowed to be independent in the way men were expected to be. Men living alone, working, paying bills, making decisions etc. has always been seen as “normal adult behavior.” So like historically women didn’t have much of an option in that category.
When women say they’re independent, it’s more reclaiming the fact that they can fully support themselves emotionally, financially, and personally without needing to rely on a man.00 ReplyIts a clear sign of low IQ. Brainrot even.
Anybody with any common sense understands that in a society we all depend on the common men. To haul us food, to repair the roads, make electricity, water etc etc.10 Reply- 974 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.
