Why does the term independent woman exist but the term independent man doesn't?

Yes, that is exactly what it means. A man is still a man without a woman.

But most women in this society get their identity from being a wife or girlfriend.

You answered perfectly. Women trade being dependent on one man for being dependent on several (oil changes, home repairs, anything technical). It's just a play on words so women can pretend to be something they are not.

Men tend to be independent by default, men are strong, and women usually need protection.
