This is the real answer to your question...

This began in the mid-20th Century and became more prominent during the Civil RIghts Era 60+ years ago.

The primary reason is that a significant number of Black activists, starting with Elijah Muhammad who founded the Black-separtist Nation of Islam movement, adopted Islam as a rejection of Christianity which was considered the White people's religion that was foisted upon them by Whites going back to the Slave Era. Islam is not a "White Religion". So, these Black persons back then chose Islam not so much because of Islam being better than Christianity, but because it was an actual choice they could make. It is human nature that it is generally liberating to assert oneself - ask any teenager about that.

Another reason, they didn't feel the methods of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a Christian pastor, were as effective at achieving the end-goal of ending White oppression in American society. King advocated for Blacks to be integrated into American society and treated as equals. But some Black activists felt that was never going to happen so that Blacks should go their own way - this was called "Black Nationalism". These activists were angrier and could be a bit more militant. And, after the assassination of King, they felt more justified. So, again, a significant number of Black people angry at this time opted for Islam. For example, three newsworthy changes in the 1960s and early 1970s were:

• Cassius Clay, the Olympic boxer from Kentucky, who became Muhammad Ali
• Lew Alcindor, the highly intelligent NBA star from NYC who became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
• NFL star Bobby Moore who became Ahmad Rashad.

In the decades since, many Blacks are Islamic - or have Islamic names if they don't practice - simply for the same reason others (White, Black, or whatever) often have Christian names: Religious tradition and corresponding names are passed down through the generations.

I think your question is a good question, but I am surprised you asked it. I was taught this stuff in high school, so I would have expected it to be taught in high school as well. Maybe because there's been some important history since I left high school in 1981 that some of this important Civil Rights history is being glossed-over to make room for more recent history.
