Is life just a game of chess?

I often compare life to a game of chess and I often associate us (humans) as pieces on the chess board amd we are moved by others or we choose to move in a certain direction of our own accord. If that is so my question for you today is: what piece on the chess board are you? Cast your vote.

Yeah in a way, it kind of is like chess, if you look at it logically and coldly. Every decision you make affects others and yourself. The butterfly effect explains it pretty well.

As for what piece I think I remember the most, it's either a knight or a pawn. A knight because they move in an unconventional way (not following the crowd), but they become very uniquely valuable in certain positions. It's accurate in a way because especially when it comes to family and loved ones, they see me as valuable only in certain scenarios.

And a pawn because I truly don't feel like I'm the captain of the ship when it comes to my own life currently and I don't feel like I'm moving much at all.

I kind of like horses, and just because of that, I would go with that one but... what do you think?

Yeah, Chess is a good metaphor for life. But I don't see myself as a chess piece but rather one of billions of players making decisions (or not) in every interaction or solo choice. You make choices. You make sacrifices. You win. You lose. You learn. Or not.

In many ways it is. Your question reminds me of this chess scene from the movie Kingdom of Heaven. Ironic because like the game of chess, life is an illusion. You make think you're in command only to find out you were in check the whole time.

No. Life is more like Backgammon due to the element of chance and randomness which can only be addressed at a probabilistic level.

For instance, think about 9/11.

Two famous people have 9/11 stories; 1 good and 1 bad.

First, the bad: Actress/model Berry Berenson was the former wife of late actor Anthony Perkins who died in 1992. She was on American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles that crashed into the North Tower on 9/11, so she died.

Now, the good: Actor, singer, and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane was supposed to be on that same American Airlines Flight 11 flight, but he had a hangover and got to the airport too late to make the flight. He lived because he missed the flight.

What happened to Berry and Seth is completely unpredictable and you can't really plan for that. Sure, you might think "OK, then I just won't ever fly again, so I'll take the train." except that the train could be derailed. So you think take a car or bus and there's a crash.

This randomness is inescapable. In Chess, there is no randomness so Chess is not like life at all. Ah, but Backgammon has as much intrigue and strategy as Chess, but Backgammon has dice - that element of randomness and chance that may thwart the greatest of strategy or plans.
