If religion vanished, would corporal punishment of children drop?

I've heard the bible (always something to do with religious conotations) always being used as an excuse to strike your child with a belt, paddles, wooden spoons, shoes, flipflops, sticks, etc. Always something to do with god and religion.

They literally do what a 2,000+ year-old outdated book says (when neither advanced medicine nor scientific knowledge were placed in use) and interpret it their own ways.

What if there was no religion and everyone were atheists? What if there was no bible? Would people still find other excuses to strike their children? Or would much less strike their kids? Would the numbers greatly decrease?

I know there are certain non-believers that still can hit their kids for other reasons but from the sounds of it, it's always someone religious that one that defends corporal punishment so much to the point they think that's the only single way to raise decent people.

Tdlr the answer is somewhat.
Religion came after humans already did this so... Every text is simply wrote from a human, and everything within is reasoning of already human actions and consequences of the world.
My hate towards religion is tribalism but tribalism was a fact of life before religion existed, still I hate religion because its a leading force of it but reality is I hate the thing humans will always be despite religion.
Its blaming the tool over the user, when the user would find another tool to do the same job however removing effective tools would make it harder for the user of course so still better than nothing.
Suffice to say one less excuse is good but I don't think a lot would change you'd need to remove a lot more.

Another good comparison is homosexuality, if religion didn't exist. It still would've been repressed for many years due to straight humans the majority finding it weird and wrong due to that.
But maybe just maybe it'd been accepted a bit quicker or a bit more loose on steadfast laws stopping it because religion was an effective way to make it seem even worse and repress it more.

of course not "everyone decided for themselves what is good or bad." he will say "i hit my dog to train him" so atheist without limit will do same to a child. unless a law forbid and teachers tell kids "if your parent hits you tell us".

what really needs to be taught is condemn the hadith quoted on a muslim website "hadith: “Teach your children to pray when they are seven years old, and hit them if they do not pray when they are 10 years old..." and that book proverbs is named proverbs because it is a "proverb not literal" so not literal hitting.

since American muslims try to make islam "sweet" for marketing i add "The Arabic word إضرب (pronounced idrib or udrub) translates to "hit", "strike", "beat", " so do not lie it means "gentle but firm words" as English websites lie!

I don't think that relationship between religion and old school punishment is necessarily a causational one. I think people attached to religious beliefs have greater faith in the what their parents believed in and what their parents parents believed in etc..

Actually religion was used to add more rules within a family aka their own moral codes and family values but the earliest protection laws were really driven by industrialization. Most modern laws about protecting children were really created by secular governments, not religion.

Honestly, the more religious the country is the more likely they rely on corporal punishment. Studies often link conservative Protestant affiliations to higher rates of support to corporal punishment. That's a fact.
