It's not free. There are just no visible fees (unless you count lunches, supplies etc). You pay, you just do it through taxes. But it is cheap because teachers are underpaid, overworked, and schools are underfunded. The truly great teachers do it because they LOVE it and care about their kids, their well being, and their future. They will never truly be compensated monetarily for all that they do. And most school districts know that, they exploit that fact.

Well now we're splitting hairs because i could tell you that low income families still pay taxes. Maybe little to nothing in the way of income and property. But they still pay sales tax. And all of thos3 fund public schools.

You're missing my ENTIRE point though. I was simply making the point that School is cheaper than daycare. And they really don't make daycare for teenagers anyhow. So that's largely what school is. They're still kids, not adults and get into trouble when they're left alone. And mom and dad have to work to make a living and can't watch them 24/7. That is where schools come in. They're largely just a holding place for kids not quite responsible enough to be adults yet. Hopefully they learn something while they're there.
