Perhaps we don't think America is so bad because we compare it to Canada, and it looks good in comparison.
"Become?" As in America was great until Trump got in? I think how America looks to most people is largely based on if they like the party that's turn it is in power. Right now Republcans think america is on the right track. It has its problems, sure, but we are going in the right direction. Soon, when Gavin Newsom or whoever's turn is next, it'll be Republicans asking why America has become so rotten.
