@Jersey I’m not interested in getting sidetracked into another argument over whether democratic socialists, socialists, and communists are technically identical. There are ideological distinctions between them. That doesn’t change my opposition to the DSA.

I actually looked into whether the Communist Control Act could simply be used against organizations like the DSA because I used to argue that Trump should do exactly that. The answer is no. Whatever I think of their ideology, political advocacy and association receive substantial First Amendment protection. You don’t defeat the DSA by having the government outlaw it.

You defeat it politically.

That means showing voters what the DSA actually advocates and persuading them not to give DSA-backed candidates enough political power to implement it.

That matters because their agenda goes far beyond Medicare for All or higher taxes. Their published program calls for moving beyond capitalism and fundamentally restructuring American political institutions, including abolishing the Senate and establishing a democratic-socialist political order.

And that is relevant to this poll as well. The DSA’s broader agenda includes its “Feminism for the 99%” program. Voters who support DSA-backed candidates because they like one popular economic proposal are still helping build political power for the movement carrying the rest of that agenda.

So my argument is not “ban them.” It is: expose the agenda, debate it, and defeat it at the ballot box before they ever accumulate enough power to implement it.
