I'm an avid coin collector, and I have a few gold coins, one each from from Australia, Congo, Liberia and the US, and two from Canada. I acquired them several years ago, before the price of gold skyrocketed, so they are worth much more than I paid for them, but I'm not going to sell them, just keep them in my collection.

No. Precious metals are the investment (generally) for dummies who think gold will protect them from the collapse of civilization. But precious metals are illiquid and hard to secure / store. And like any commodity they can be very volatile.

Honestly, though. There was a recent research study that looked at burglary in London. It found burglary rates rose and fell with gold price fluctuations for people of Indian descent (who apparently are more likely to hold physical gold) compared with people not of Indian descent.
