Why do people seem to love toxic or 'sick' people but hate normal ones?

People hate normal people. They love ugly dirty yucky aggressive psychos. And they hate normal person. Did you notice?

Those people you love to hate are fun, loud, exciting. You're dull and boring. At least that's the surface read from a lot of people. They don't look deeper than that to see the loud, fun people are generally a hot mess of self indulgence but no substance who generate a lot of chaos and drama.

There's a guy I know who's part of a group I see all the time. He's the life of the party, talks your ears off. Yeah, he's great fun. But he's also a 50 year old cokehead who runs to the men's room 4 or 5 times a night to do a line. I keep waiting for an EMS crew to bust through the doors with a gurney to render CPR. It's gonna happen someday. Who the hell knows what his life is like when he's not out performing for attention.

Some people like living on the jagged edge. I dated somebody who was maybe bi polar and probably an alcoholic. It really was sort of fun at first until she got out of control.

Machavellism + Psychopathy + Narcissism. People are fascinated with that. This the reason why not Luke Skywalker but Darth Vader is the star of Starwars and Gargamel of The Smurfs. It's about self identification. People prefer to identify themselves with the oppressor and despise victims.
However this perception changes when they are forced to play active role in games with such Dark Triad individuals. There is a lot of psychological defense mechanics and cognitive dissonance when they aren't just observer but victims of such people.
