Why does customer service feel so poor in Australia compared to other countries?

Australian customer service can sometimes feel almost non-existent, particularly when compared with the standards of hospitality and customer service found in countries such as Japan, France, Italy and the UK for instance. In my experience, service in Australia can be unnecessarily slow, inefficient and lacking in basic manners, attentiveness and consideration for customers.

What is particularly frustrating is that even some developing countries can sometimes provide a stronger customer-service culture, where businesses make a greater effort to accommodate customers, resolve problems and ensure that people feel valued. In Australia, however, there can be an attitude that customers should simply accept poor service, long waiting times and a lack of communication and a pathetic customer service culture.

Of course, not every Australian business or employee is like this, but I believe there is a noticeable gap in customer-service standards in some parts of Australia. Greater emphasis on professionalism, courtesy, efficiency and genuinely caring about the customer experience would make a significant difference.
