Why do some Indian shopkeepers seem dishonest or overcharge customers?

Many Indian-owned stores have been known for not only exploiting their own people but also cheating customers by overcharging and giving less than what was paid for , such as listing items that you are not buying hoping you don't see, Indians are known for overcharging and aren’t known for their honesty, even in their home country, as India is a well-known scam capital particularly phone scamming.

For example, I was charged for items from the fruit and vegetable department despite only purchasing three items.
But I caught him out before I purchased it.

They have families to support and they feel this is the way to do it, and when they immigrate to other countries, old habits die hard.
I got food from an Indian restaurant in Niagara a $30 meal somehow came out to $60. And I went to a Pakistani restaurant near my town and got charged for a dish that never got served.
Old habits die hard, but also, some of them are just stupid and don't know how to count.

i really dont think this is an 'india' issue. you never heard of nigerian prince schemes and somali pirates? this happens because every culture has its tricky rotten people. so like you said buyer beware... from everyone.

overcharge for one item you agreed. if they add items beware.

My most recent experience was the shop keeper kept my change. 😡. After paying for my purchase, I didn’t get change back. I asked him for my change and he said he didn’t have change. What? He refused to refund either. It wasn’t much change or I would have drove straight to the police department to file a report.

a lot of indians are built that way, they love to cheat people... I'm not saying there's not good indians out there but the higher population are just bad people with no regard for women, they defrauded my mom over $90,000 2 years ago... They steal from a lot of Americans
