So are most states, why? I have no clue, the ages pick for what one can legally do aren't consistent nor follow a logical pattern a lot of the time.

Here in UK it makes sense to me that because you leave school at 16 for higher education or work that's you now in a space of adults being adult yourself. However you are still restricted from driving for whatever reason or alcohol, cigs though alcohol and cigs are sorta allowed too with the difference being buying or doing, doing is fine in most cases. Why don't we just have 16 you can do everything I don't know. And you're still restricted sexually too cause online is a no go of course but that's weird right since sexual activity in person is 100% okay.

I've felt 18 is a good age of consent here in the U. S. for similar reasons as you've had. Most people graduate high school here at 17 or 18. I figure when they're in high school they're surrounded by people they've known since the dawn of time and have 2 sets of parents to run to if anything goes wrong so it's probably always better to date people in high school if you are in high school.

After that, I figure about everyone's a stranger (at least at first) and you're working and being alongside older people anyway, so I don't think it would serve much of a purpose to have it higher than 19, at maximum, here, and I think 18 is pretty good.

That's also assuming that the state has rules that make it okay for 2 people below the age of consent to sleep with each other.

I think it makes sense to associate age of consent with when you leave school.

@Rorroto Exactly if its based on logic the most easy take is when they're no longer in high school, and yup I agree with Romeo and Juliet laws too makes no sense to punish close age ranges. But US makes even less sense with such example of alcohol being 21 there is no logic to working adults or adults in education can't drink meanwhile you can drive at younger age too.

Why the laws don't follow a simple logic I don't know, plus we all know what the law states is already accepted at not being followed because everyone knows these ones don't make sense.

My mother was born in Kansas. They used to have a law that you could drink weaker beer (like probably light beer) if you were 18. It seems like a pretty widespread tradition to drink before you're 21. Sometimes I wonder if that actually makes it more popular, because it's cool and forbidden.

The UK - not so long ago - was considering lowering the age of consent downward from 16 where as it is now increasing from 16 to 18. Not sure if that has kicked in or not yet.

The reason for considering lowering was the age of puberty had decreased and that with puberty comes sexual awareness and desire. I think we can say that is a pragmatic view.

Let's say a 16 yo girl driven by hormonal desire seeks sex. In practice with make up and dark lighting in a club it is is difficult to distinguish between 16 and 18 yo women. A man has a reasonable expectation that the women in a club are 18 or over as licensing laws bar 16 yos.

I've known of one 16 yo who disappeared for a couple of days from her parents home because she was hot for hot sex. So that's a pragmatic view.

16 is a very common age of consent. For myself I think the age of adulthood is the better mark.

I don't know why, but European law tends to separate age of consent/legal majority — i. e. when one can sign contracts on one's own — and age of sxeual self-determination. For instance, the age of legal majority in Sweden is 18 while sexual self-determination is "awarded", for lack of a better term, at the age of 15.

Meanwhile, Swedish Parliament approved the previous liberal-conservative government's 2024 proposal on lowering the age of criminal responsibility for certain violent offenses and drug trafficking from 18 to 15.

It’s 15 and 16 years old over there with age of consent if they are with an adult and obviously it doesn’t matter if you’re both the same age but in the USA there’s only a few states where it’s 16 and not 18 like most places in the USA
