Humiliating fraternity initiation -- need advice please?

I'm a college sophomore. On Friday (March 9) I'm scheduled to join a fraternity, along with 7 other guys. We were told last month that there would be an "initiation," but it was not disclosed to us at the time. My brother, who joined in 1999, told me yesterday what they're going to do to us. The fraternity brothers are going to hold a so-called "reception" for myself and the other pledges. In reality, they're going to have us strip to our underwear and act as "servers" during the 3 hour party, providing drinks and snacks to the guests. Two campus sororities and the frat brothers' girlfriends will be there. My brother will be there with his wife (my sister-in-law) and her two sisters, both about my age. (UGHH). Basically, it's all about publicly humiliating the new members -- which is nothing new with fraternities. It's common. I don't mind some good-natured ribbing, but I'm really dreading this. Spending almost 3 hours in my underwear in front of 40-50 sorority gals my own age is embarrassing enough, but this is 2012 and everyone has a video camera on their phone. I don't want the worst night in my life living for 20 years on the Internet. I'm undecided if I'll go through with it. If I back out, I'll never hear the end of it. Would appreciate opinions from both gals and guys on what to do. Thanks and sorry I went on so long in this post.

Dude don't be a f***ing homo. Life isn't all about happy good fuzzy feelings and running away from sticky situations. It's okay to get humiliated and be the butt of a joke sometimes: as long as the people making the joke don't hate your guts but are your friends. I doubt any of these guys hate you or are doing this with malicious intent. They're checking to see if you're the type of guy that can keep his confidence and chin up when put in a humiliating situation.

It's all about having a good time man. Just relax and don't let the situation turn you into a floppy vagina. Because they'll notice and think you're too girlish and sensitive to join their male organization.

For the record I'm in a fraternity and regularly hang around my house and outside in just my boxer-briefs, don't care who is looking or around. And it's not like I've got a killer body or anything. Pretend you're in your swimwear and don't wear tighty whiteys and I think you'll be okay man it's no big deal

If your afraid of a video ending up on the Internet then you should really think...is anyone really going to see it. I have never seen such a video or even thought about search for frat initiation videos. None of my friends have mentioned to watch a video like that nor do they watch them.

My advice, don't bring it up to them because it will just make them want to do it. Just go through with it and enjoy it. Don't make it look like your having a bad time or else they'll just keep bothering you throughout the night. Enjoy it but don't enjoy it to much. Go with the flow

I've heard of some pretty bad hazing before, but remember that he could also being telling you this to scare you. Hazing rituals also change a lot over time. At my school, hazing can get the frat kicked off campus, so they keep it pretty hush hush. Only the frat brothers see it. If they were to do that kind of thing in front of 2 different sororities with cameras, it would surely get out. Things have changed since 1999, I doubt it will be anything that serious.

Wear something funny, impress people with your sense of humour, and make light of the situation! Honestly if you don't act like you're embarrassed or self-conscious, NOBODY will care that you're in your undies. If you get a few laughs out of the guests then so much the better. Take it in your stride. You only get to do this once, so don't make it a regret :) Good luck with the initiation!

You'll never hear the end of it now, for the next year or so, but you won't lose jobs in the future because of someone's humiliating twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.
