Is giving alcohol to dogs illegal?

Not that I do, but say someone 21 or over gave their dog alcohol and the dog enjoyed it. Does it count as abuse? Even if the dog liked it? I don't think there is a law, but do you think it should be a law? Or do you think it's just silly to even think about making that a law?

btw I want to make it very clear I'm not planning on it... my friends sister used to do that allll the time. we htink that's why he's really slow.

My auntie's American Akita used to drink alcohol. Like, she'd set her glass down, turn around, turn back and there was *no beer*. He'd stammer around the place and fall over himself, it was GOLD. I don't know if it's bad for dogs or anything, we had to find places out of reach to put our drinks, like, it wasn't intentional, but sh*t, he sure enjoyed it.

Owning those dogs is illegal here though, never mind giving them beer.

It should be legal. Spiking their water bowls is a good way to get them to stop barking all day and night. They stammer around in silence, wondering what the hell is wrong with them. It's hilarious! :p

yeah but a baby can grow up and buy alcohol and abuse it. Dogs cant, so it makes it a bit more wrong when a baby likes it. Not saying either should be having it.

It is a law, it falls under Animal Cruelty/Abuse 2nd Degree in nearly all 50 states, and it came about because dogs can't metabolize alcohol like we do, so it becomes an extreme toxin in their bodies and does huge amounts of internal damage BEFORE actually killing them.

If it is a law it is a stupid one. I can legally take my dog to the vet and have him killed whenever I want. I don't legally need a reason, but I can just say something like "He keeps peeing on my carpet". It doesn't make any sense for that to be legal but for it to be illegal for him to have a little beer.
