Guys: would you date if you recently had to declare bankruptcy?

Question

I know eventually you would, but until you got your finances straight would you hold off on getting into a serious relationship? I'm asking this because a guy I am seeing is going through this. However, he doesn't know I know. I could tell he likes me but the relationship hasn't progressed. So I was talking to a mutual friend of ours (his very close friend) who told me, he does like me but he was going through some things that may be holding him back. I didn't pry, but his friend told me that he had to file for bankruptcy after not being able to pay back student loans. Answer the main question and explain...I'm just wondering if this is something I want to get into...I don't know the ins and outs of the situation and how things work with this.

Regardless of what he thinks you should probably be careful. If he had to declare bankruptcy (which is absolutely not something to be taken lightly) It was because he was completely irresponsible with his finances and likely will be the same as he continues to dig himself out of this hole.

If you stay with him you will likely have financial troubles due to his. This would also affect you potentially purchasing a home together and a whole lot of other things!

Bankruptcy follows you harshly for 7 years then not so badly for the rest of your life! Tread lightly!

Does not a big deal. what's the connection of dating of a guy when he recently had to declare bankruptcy? Filing for bankruptcy sounds not so bad. It's just a last a resort to person/companies who have financial crisis. They will need to file bankruptcy in order to get fresh financial start.

Good for you for sticking it out! It can cause insecurities for him but you can help him ease that insecurity.

You really love him. Make him understand that you love him no matter what.

He's trying to get his life together at least, right? If so, his effort will pay off in the end and you providing moral support, might feel you've made a difference in someone's life. :)

There is no way that I would date if I had just declared bankruptcy. Most men have self esteem issues when we don't live up to the standards of what society tells us a man should be. Men with self esteem issues tend to avoid the dating game, until they are more confident in their lives.

Student loans don't go away when you file bankruptcy. He will have problems buying a house and cars. It seems like a lot of trouble from the beginning and financial irresponsibility is normally a sign of bigger problems with self-control but who am I to say no to love.

You don't have all the information.  Student loans are one of the few loans that are not discharged by bankruptcy.  They also have programs that allow you to "pause" your payments during times of financial distress. I wouldn't date someone in this much financial trouble.

the anonymous dude is right on the money so no most women want to know how stable you are if you are over 20 and if you don't have a good job, a car, or live on your own most women will decline you anyways so I wouldn't even try

I wouldn't hold back, but I know some guys don't want to have a serious girlfriend when they are broke because they feel that will only cause them to be broke longer

me personally I wouldn't, but I belief  that love is love & nothing else matters (ya call me what you will it doesn't change what I believe), but some guys might find their pride hurt to enter into a relationship while in a weakened state like that

No way. I consider myself a frugal person and would not date unless my finances are stable.  Student loans are hurting a lot of people especially the ones that cannot find a job with their degrees.

No I wouldn't date. I wouldn't date without a full time job either. That's why I didn't date at all until I graduated from university and found my first proper job. As a guy, you just can't afford to.
