Four years after a historically large number of candidates ran for president, the field for the 2024 campaign is getting crowded once more, even as it is headlined by the same two aging men who faced off in 2020: President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump.

A dozen Republicans have already entered the race, and additional candidates may still join them — creating a fractured field that could prevent voters who oppose Mr. Trump from coalescing around a single alternative, just as it did in 2016.

On the Democratic side, Mr. Biden has drawn only a couple of long-shot challengers.

Trump Threatens to Appoint ‘Maybe Even Nine’ Supreme Court Justices if Elected

This week, the Supreme Court declared affirmative action in college admissions unconstitutional, killed Biden’s student debt relief plan, and permitted a graphic designer in Colorado to refuse service to same-sex couples. Of course, twice-indicted former president Donald Trump wasted no time in taking credit for it all during his speech at a summit for Moms for Liberty — a right-wing, anti-government group — on Friday.

“Many presidents never get the opportunity to appoint a Supreme Court justice. I had three. They are gold,” he boasted to the crowd gathered in Philadelphia that night, referring to Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. “Maybe we’ll get three or four more. Can you imagine? Let’s have seven or eight or maybe even nine.”

While Trump continued to wail against the ongoing criminal cases against him, while also airing out his grievances about immigration and the media, the ex-president vowed to enact a series of dangerous educational policies that would target vulnerable youth and marginalized communities.

Trump also pledged to eliminate funding for schools that teach students about race and gender.

No charges for Oklahoma sheriff who talked of killing journalists, prosecutor says

A sheriff in southeast Oklahoma who was among several county officials caught on tape discussing killing journalists and lynching Black people won't face criminal charges or be removed from office, the state's top prosecutor said Friday.

In a letter to Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt, Attorney General Gentner Drummond said his office and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation had completed their investigation and found no legal grounds to dismiss McCurtain County Sheriff Kevin Clardy.

“There are countless examples of incidents from across the country where public officials make inflammatory comments that spark severe condemnation,” Drummond wrote. "Oftentimes the offending official resigns in disgrace. Sometimes the outrage fades and the matter is forgotten.

He added: “Regardless, there is no provision of law in Oklahoma to throw elected officials out of office merely for saying something offensive.”

Drummond said McCurtain County voters will make the final decision on whether Clardy remains in office and suggested Stitt appeal to voters there and perhaps identify someone to run against Clardy.
