Boys how do you get into sport teams?

i’m talking about the nfl, nhl, nbl, and etc. cause most teams have been here for decades and i don’t think you’re supposed to watch every single play from the very start. so how do you pick a team and stick with it?

First, fandom is often based on geography. You grow up supporting a team because that's what your parents did; it's like religion, if you think about it.

Now, as far as "watching every single play from the very start", that depends on a few things:
1. What's the sport? Some sports are fluid like hockey or lacrosse or auto racing or soccer with only occassional stoppages. Others are event driven like baseball and football. Then there's a mix like basketball. This is important because different people have different tolerances for sports based on this factor. Similarly, broadcasts have to accommodate and so broadcasts may be annoying too.
2. By "watching", there's lots of ways of doing that...
A) Attending the sport in person.
B) Watching a live broadcast on TV.
C) Watching a live broadcast on streaming.
D) Watching a live broadcast in a public place like a bar or stadium or restaurant.
E) Listening on the radio.
3. What's the length of the season and when is the season?
For instance, in the NFL, the regular season is now 19 games long (spread out over 20 weeks). There is only one game each week. And because football is event driven (that is, play is not continuous), it makes it easier to broadcast and watch. And football is during the cooler months, so staying inside to watch is easier since there's less urge to go outside to do things. And football games are on the weekends usually. These factors are what make football in the USA the #1 sport.

Personally, I listen to sports because I like radio broadcasts more than TV broadcasts. I can always watch highlights later. I follow baseball this way on SiriusXM because I can get ANY radio feed of any game. The only sport that I WATCH religiously are football playoff games, sometimes the World Series, but each season I follow the National Lacrosse League via ESPN+, a streaming service that I subscribe to just for that. I am a big NLL fan and the NLL is a very exciting fast-moving fluid sport.

Everyone loves a good story and, each game, is another story. Each season is like a chapter in a book. Each sport's history is series of novels which memorable characters and events. The great events and athletes that you see today become the mythic figures to those unborn. Sports is an example of a great cultural "novel" that is continuously being written and passed down to future generations and each of us is part of that story too.

I live in a city with multiple teams and I don't live far from where they play. You can't go to the grocery store or some social function and not talk about said team in some way. Just having some familiarity or being a fan can lead to fun times and even relationships.

its easier if you are starting to get into a team when their season starts, but there is rules. like you can go on a date to say an NFL game where we are half way through the season and become hooked, and you won't miss a beat because playoffs are not until end of the year.

I should say no rules to liking a team, whenever or what you want. it's just easier if they are close by of course.

okay yeah imma take this to consideration cause my family likes the cowboys so i know what football team. but nobody in my family likes hockey so it’s hard to pick

yeah that's how it is with me and baseball, I'm like the only one that's really into it so I adopted when I moved to my current city and even got season tickets. we don't have hockey here but I liked the close by teams growing up so catch them when on TV sometimes. it's so much easier if one near.

For NFL, when I was a young kid, I picked the rival team of my older brother. He liked the Cowboys and I picked the NY Giants. I stuck with them since I was in elementary school, but haven't really watched much NFL since they started the take a knee during the national anthem and BLM BS.

For soccer, I watch the teams that have girls I find attractive and that aren't man hating, White hating, feminists, so I watch Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal sometimes. Mostly Real Madrid and Barcelona though because more Spanish women are cute in my opinion. I have a few favorite players from each of those teams.

I used to watch the USA national team and some NWSL until they also started the BLM, anti White, anti male stuff.

If you want to understand the game better, regardless of what sport it is, I'd suggest playing a video game of it for a while. That is how I learned most of the rules for most sports I have watched, and for a couple I don't watch too. Madden taught me the NFL rules. FIFA/FC taught me soccer. NBA Action taught me basketball. Top Spin taught me tennis.
Oh yeah, I used to watch tennis back when Roger Federrer and Rafael Nadal were in their prime winning Grand Slams.

Soccer/football fan here. It's a mix of local patriotism and generally liking certain players and trainers. Of course a minimum amount of great games and successes also help. I remember reading the sports parts of the Saturday and Sunday newspapers for as long as I started to read.

You need to understand the rules of the game. Then watch a few games and get familiar with the flow of the game. Watch how plays unfold. In a hockey game watch how the players position themselves, pass the puck to each other and move the puck down to the opponent's goal. How they get set up to take a shot on goal. There is a lot to it. Does somebody position himself in front of the net to get a rebound?

It takes a while like everything else.

Most people pick the local team, or closest to it, or the team that was local where they grew up. Others pick the team that was most successful in their formative years. People who don't live near a team presumably pick a team they find fun to watch.

For most people, it's based on where they live.
For others, it can be because someone significant in their life influenced them to be a fan of a particular team.
But there can be a number of other reasons as well. Sometimes people are just drawn to certain teams or players and they can't really explain it.

I care only about college sports. I received my undergraduate and law degrees from FSU, so my interest began more than 50 years ago when I was in college and attending home football games.
