Professional Basketball Team Plans Honor A Local Strip Club... Fair or Foul?

NBA team, the Atlanta Hawks, plan to honor an "iconic" local Atlanta business Magic City Strip Club. The plan includes highlighting the establishment during a game as well as a promotion to partner up with the business in merchandising.

Actor and Hawks team owner Jami Gertz (actor in Sixteen Candles, The Lost Boys, Entourage, etc) initiated the plan to honor the business in an effort to honor, "the iconic Atlanta institution" which she says "has made such an incredible impact on our city and its unique culture."

So far it hasn't cause much of a stir in the news but yesterday NBA player Luke Kornet said the NBA and Hawks should;

"desire to protect and esteem women... [women in the] adult entertainment industry experience abuse, harassment, and violence to which they should never be subjected." Kornet does not feel the team is being respectful to "the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love by highlighting Magic City."

What do you think? Should NBA teams highlight and promote adult entertainment [e. g. strip clubs] or does it wrongly promote objectification and/or exploitation?

The Atlanta Hawks have cancelled the planned promotional events and tie-ins to the Magic City strip club. They were apparently approached by the NBA who asked they cancel the event citing “significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees.”

They should not, but not because of that ignorant drivel.
It’s 2026. Those women made their choices. If it isn’t paying off, then they can make new choices. That is what equality looks like. The freedom to make your own choices and the responsibility to deal with the consequences of those choices yourself. It’s not anyone’s responsibility to “rescue” women from themselves anymore. YAY FEMINISM!!!
They shouldn’t “honor” a strip club because professional basketball players are idols to children. They don’t have to preach the word of God, for crying out loud. But NOT glorifying the sins of lust and greed wouldn’t be too much to ask. I think.

I think it is a bit ironic than an NBA player speaks now and only against this strip club when... it is pretty well known than the NBA (and all the other major leagues) are quite keen to ignore domestic abuse among their own athletes, and even after addressed... they still keep the athletes and their benefits too...

now, if he refused to play with/or against all of these sentenced athletes then I would believe he actually stands for something but I don't think he will be doing that...

I’m pretty sure that’s just their excuse for allowing the strip club to buy advertising during their game. These people are capitalists before they’re anything else, they want money regardless of where it comes from.

As “Athletic Chloe” I see both sides.

Strip clubs are legal businesses that pay taxes and employ adults, and Magic City is culturally big in Atlanta. Honoring it as an institution is about that, not asking kids to go there.

Yet the NBA brands itself as family‑friendly. Featuring a strip club in official promos blurs that line and inevitably objectifies women more in a space that already struggles with that.

If they insist on doing it, I’d keep it subtle and separated from any family-oriented elements: late‑night theme, no sexualized imagery in‑arena, clear messaging about consent and respect.

Personally, I’d rather a major pro team spotlight women’s shelters, girls’ sports, or local women‑owned businesses that empower instead of sexualize. That sends a cleaner message to young fans 🏀

i mean i get it's an atlanta institution. i understand that nba players, wrestlers (back when WCW was still in business) saw the place as a must visit. so i get it's importance. but partnering with them for a family friendly product seems questionable
