For real self-defense, is a mixed combat system better than single arts?

Michael Calandra, 10th Dan karate and Japanese Ju Jitsu instructor, basically said for Self Defense, you need a combat system which combines the best of striking, joint locks, throws and other takedowns, as well as ground fighting. You can't just take "Karate" nor "BJJ" in a vacuum and expect to be able to defend yourself. And no, what most people teach in a "krav maga" school is not enough for self-defense either: The bad guys know how to fight dirty too. You BETTER be able to 'throw down' when a self-defense situation happens.

Joint locks are way, way more effective than people realize. It baffles my mind why they don't get used more often in MMA, other than the fighters simply do not know how to do them correctly. I can one-handed tap a 235lbs heavyweight black belt using any of the first 6 joint locks I ever learned. ONE HANDED and he'll either tap or yell "I quit".

Ground fighting is good ot know, but for self-defense, you should stay on your feet. You don't know how many attackers there are ahead of time, and if you go to the ground, bystanders might blame YOU and join your opponent in the fight.

At the beginning of the fight, you should loudly say, "I don't want to fight you," so any bystanders know hyou are not the aggressor.
