Why are most gamers obsessed with high end graphics when they should be more concerned with their overall skills?

I'm a BIG believer in giving it your all in whatever it is your doing

I used to compete in track & field when I was younger & i have it my all for that WIN & in school I was a B+ student who again... gave it my all to stay consistent

I was a part time gamer while competing in REAL sports & i learned the ends & out of EVERY game i played... endless repetition until I got better

In most multiplayer games i CARRY my entire team to the WIN because my teammates just lack skill

These are the same types who complain about wanting a next gen console with high end graphics wh n there actual skills are trash

Why spend $500 for a brand new gaming console and a high end 4k tv when you're still terrible at whatever game you play?

You are absolutely right!!! A shiny new console does NOT equate skill-

However, it can be a factor, to an extent. Let me explain: while I don't think you need to buy a high end pc to "get good," if you're running a slow computer, or don't have a decent graphics card, or processor to run certain games, it CAN impact your performance. Mostly due to lag, not being able to see certain details, or slower reaction time.

For example, I play WoW. I have a friend that used to not be able to do dungeons or raid because his internet was atrocious: he would lag or not be able to react to certain boss mechanics fast enough. Now that he has better internet, guess what-
He's phenomenal!

So while you still need to know how to play your class, spec, etc... I will say that it still helps to have a decent, not high end, over the top, console or gaming rig that can support the game and its features as well.

Like everything else in life, people who are obsessed with presentation are just trying to cover up what they lack in. Just to throw out a few examples: people who consistently post glorious shit about their lives on social media, girls who wear way too much makeup, people who shop too much and *look* rich... The list goes on. So I genuinely believe that if a gamer is too obsessed with the presentation of their setup, it doesn't prove that they have any remote skill. And it shouldn't matter. If you're not famous, spending thousands on some blinking lights are not worth it if you're not making money on being a skilled gamer. It's not like anyone else but you can see them.

To be fair, it is difficult to play properly at 30 frames per second. The reaction time won't be the same and there will be a huge disadvantage in competitive gaming. I game at 120 FPS now in Apex Legends and 60 FPS sort of became like 30 FPS for me but not nearly as dramatic. 60 FPS I can accept but more is better still.

But I agree on something with you - Graphic whores. I do not like their classification of what makes a game good (just top realistic graphics?). It's one thing if we take a video game from the 90s like Gothic or Command & Conquer. It's something else when we have Minecraft and it's textures and block-models in 2009 when games like Crysis exist at the same time.

In competitive games like MOBAs high end graphics are not necessarily needed but what it gives you is reassurance and stability. If you have a GPU that can quite happily handle 120fps in a MOBA and your for example using a 60Hz display. Then when you lock your FPS to 60 (To match monitor refresh rate) you know that you will get 60 fps 99.9% of the time and if there are any drops it's most likely game end (Such as server issues) and not your hardware

Also sometimes people want to appreciate the artwork of the game they are in (Single player) in order to get that full effect you'll need high end graphics

Not everyone cares about being the best in the world - and most people won't be even if they try. Many enjoy just playing at whatever level they are at, and they enjoy the realism and immersiveness of modern high-end games.

Games are made for fun, not everyone plays FPS or even multiplayer.

I play in a couple clans, but would not say I am good, it’s a social thing for having a laugh n giggle.

The people who are graphics junkies are after the art - not the play - of the game. They are the types to spend 1000 bucks to watch people run at the olympics, but won't do a thousand steps themselves.

Because most gamers are casuals who play for fun and immersion and don't care how good they are, weird right? I never cared about graphics either, I always turn them down to a bare minimum. I just want to click the head and I'm happy, I don't care how the graphics look. Or actually I do care, and the more simple and boxy, the better.

Different people want different experiences from their games. I like a mix of good visuals and engaging gameplay, but my definition of those two criteria are very broad. I love indie gems in retro style 16-bit presentation just as much as I enjoy dense open worlds like Cyberpunk, or competitive multiplayer games like Rocket League

if gaming is about "winning" for you, then having fun will be a tedious and stressfull task. you should understand that most people are able to derive fun from games without being a winner. maybe that's something you need to learn. don't lose sight of the fun over your obsession with winning.

I haven't generally seen people blame the computer graphics for their poor skills. Generally I've seen people wanting higher graphics just for a better viewing and gaming experience.
I play Destiny 2 on PC and I'm pretty average. I'm not a hardcore gamer so I'm not concerned about my skills much. But my pc is a somewhat mid tier one so I can only play it on low graphics, so I'd prefer to have a higher graphics pc so that I can play with better graphic settings.

In some games, better graphics will allow you to see some people better, making their hiding tactics less effective and give you more situational awareness overall. For example, I recently got a much bigger screen than I used to have with a higher resolution and it allows me to see some enemies from much further away or to not use scopes at all while still remaining accurate.

i don't see how this can't go hand-in-hand. i think anyone would love to have a high-end gaming console. for those that don't play fps or competitive games, i don't think their skill level matters. personally, some games i play just for fun and in others i try to become better.

I have no idea. I made the leap from consoles to PC gaming last year and couldn't care less about graphics or video cards. As long as the damn game can run, I'm fine, which is more than I can say about Cyberpunk 2077...
