My old iPhone charger over heated and my new one is not charging properly. What should I do?

So I changed cell phone chargers and am now using apple and it’s charging normally again, I was told non apple chargers are usually not good with apple devices.

Take it one step at a time. Try to isolate each segment of the situation.

Let's start with the easy ones.

"Cooling delay" - Yes, iPhones with circuitry that will shut it down if the phone res e, and/or the battery, overheat. It happened once to me on a trip: left the phone in the car, in the sun - got back, it wouldn't turn on. It even FELT hot to the touch. I put it in a plastic bag with a little towel and stuck them in a dry part of our cooler. After cooling for about 90 minutes, it was working fine.

Power cord - Most generic power cords are passable at best. Be sure to get one that is certified Apple. I've gone through countless others that turned bad on me. (Ikea has certified cords for $9 the last time we were there. ) The usual problem is where the cord enters the little connectors at either end- the cheap ones do not have enough "strain relief" in the form of a little extruded plastic "nose cone" to allow the wire to gradually bend and not fold or break off from the connector.

Charger. Some chargers come with a built-in cord (if either break, you have to get a whole new one). An increasingly large number of them do not (all the better to have you buy TWO things instead of one. ) If you have access to a "volt-ohm meter", you can check the output of a charger, which should be around 5 volts, between 1 and 2 amps. This is usually expressed an a "milliamp" rating. So, if the charger puts out 1.3 amps, the rating would be 5v, 1300 ma.

Batteries- That is getting a bit more complicated, but still not too hard. If your phone will turn on, go to SETTINGS, and scroll down to BATTERY and click on that. Then, click on the line for BATTERY HEALTH. 100% is a brand new battery. I am now at 85% after 2.5 years of operation. I ditched my last iPhone for a new one when it hit 52% and I had to charge it every day. Now I charge it once every 2- 2.5 days. We bought a small end table that has a built-in charger, and it has really helped. (similar to my pic, except we turn it so the plug-ins are in the back- 2 USBs for charging phones and laptops, and 2 120v for lamps, radios, etc. ).

Charging table- 2 USB ports, 2 120v outlets.

Try to recharge to keep the battery in the 20-85% range (there is still debate about this, but this is what my son-in-law swears by)- don't let it drain all the way down nor charge to 100% too often.

"Broken" phone. If your phone can "turn on" (power up), then it isn't broken per se. Yes, the battery could be hitting the end of its life, but a new battery will bring it back up to snuff. One thing to look for (I learned from my son-in-law, the computer dude) is dirt in the Lightning Port on the bottom of your iPhone. Get a can of "air" ($3-5 at an office supply store like Staples, hardware store, etc. ). Blow out the port. Using a flashlight, carefully LOOK to see if there are any stray particles in the port. If there are and you have a very steady and gentle touch, use a toothpick to GENTLY probe and remove the dirt bits. If you aren't that steady (like me), shoot several more short bursts of "air" into the port to dislodge and blow away any debris. Recheck for dirt with the flashlight. Once the port is clean, you have eliminated another problem from the equation.

If at this point the phone does not work, you will have to bring it to one of many repair shops. Many will check it out for minimal or no cost, or for a small fee which would be applicable to the repair. I believe that batteries now go for about $100-120. If the phone is more than 3 generations old, you might want to consider getting a new phone just on general principles anyway, since the phone is now likely worth less than the cost of the new battery.

on the update - There are three categories of "Apple-compatible" accessories - 1. Apple-made. 2. Apple-certified (Apple's specs and approval, but made by some other company) 3. Non-Apple approved/certified. As long as I've stuck with 1 or 2, I've done OK, as you seem to be doing now, too.

Get a new power block or chord
its prob not ur phone if the first one just overheated
or try a new outlet it could be an outlet problem

Its the port on your phone where the charger goes in too it's probably defective it's time for a new phone call phones break easy it sucks.

Either invest in another charger or else another (this time less expensive and less complicated) phone.
