Do you support the Right to Repair?

Question

If you own something, you should be able to repair it yourself or take it to a technician of your choice. People are pretty used to this concept when it comes to older cars and appliances, but right-to-repair advocates argue that modern tech, especially anything with a computer chip inside, is rarely repairable because manufacturers refuse to make parts, manuals, and special tools available to individuals or independent repair shops, forcing people to use overpriced manufacturers shops or replace products altogether. Apple is notorious for this!

Legislation is pending in congress and state legislatures to outlaw such monopolistic practices.

Yes I do. Like the old saying goes ""They don't make em like they used to"". Planned obsolescence is a thing and they engineer things to break after awhile because why sell you 1 phone when I can force you to buy 20. E waste is bad both for our wallet and environment. One company named after a fruit are true innovators in the field of ripping you off. But there are ethical electronic PCs and phones built to be easily pulled apart, re customized, repaired and claims they will support these products with firmware and parts well into the future.

I was wondering when this push back would happen... go back to a "repair it" rather than "dispose and recycle" model. Everything is planned to break and be hard to repair. This is a reason I don't believe "lifetime warranty" on things like e-bikes. Baloney... when the battery goes, I doubt there make that battery anymore... and the whole thing is trash. Whereas a regular bike, was easily fixable.

Good to hear, yes. And next comes... layaway.. because cost of everything will be so expensive.

I absolutely do. I get that repairing something yourself voids the warranty but repairing a product and reusing products is environmentally friendly. Things these days aren't made that you can repair yourself outside of a specialist and they aren't made to last this is to force you to buy new products. I mean how many of us have bought a washer& dryer only to have them break down a month after the warranty runs out. I buy German cars because at least if I can't repair them they have some reliability that means I won't break down on the highway in the butthole of nowhere like a Ford, chevorlet or dodge will. Used to only buy American cars but they broke my heart and my wallet everytime.

I grew up taking apart all my old stuff, fixing it, and putting it back together. I used to work as a mechanic, and now I work in IT, so the inclusion of computer components don't bother.

Nobody has to fix their own stuff, but it should at least be an option, for those of us that do. Of course, fair's fair; if we screw it up, then the company should be able to charge us more, too.

Absolutely. Ever noticed how many electronic devices aren't meant to be disassembled? I can fix almost anything but getting it to hold together afterwards (frangible injection molded plastic... grrrr) makes it difficult to get the fucker back together.

After market parts are also a huge issue in the aviation world where liability is so fucking high.

One of the big things that makes America so unique is guys in garages making, fixing, building stuff.

Yes but we need to consider practicality. If a company go under there won't be spare parts. This is why I think 3d printers will be big in the future because they can make sure most none electric elements can be recreated forever.
