    Computer Engineer. Let me clarify some things.

    Because binary is base 2, we use powers of 2 all the time in computing. There happens to be a convenient number that appears with 2^10. 1024. This is sufficiently close to 1000 that these get the same prefixes used in scientific fields. ie 1024 Bytes = 1kB.

    So at that point, these prefixes become ambiguous. Is a kB 1000 bytes? Or is it 1024 bytes? For programmers and engineers, it is always the latter. The moment you're talking about "Bytes" you're talking about a binary unit and so you use the binary prefixes.

    For storage salespeople, they realized they could take advantage of this confusion and treat kilo as 1000 instead of 1024, and thus boost the storage they put on the label without it being false advertising.

    So later, they created unambiguous prefixes that refer specifically to every 10th power of 2. They are as follows:

    KiB = Kibibyte = 1024 Bytes = 2^10
    MiB = Mebibyte = 1024 Kibibytes = 2^20
    GiB = Gibibyte = 1024 Mebibytes = 2^30.
    TiB = Tebibyte
    PiB = Pebibyte

    So the term "kilobyte" can still refer to both 1000B and 1024B. When the distinction is especially important, "Kibibyte" is used.

    So because you're talking about computer storage, there are 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte. The only exception to this is on the box of a storage device. This is the only place you'll see that. Everywhere else it's 1024.

    I hope that definitively resolves it.

      prefixes are ambiguous for binary units. That's why you see everyone split on the whole matter.

  • How Many Megabytes in A Gigabyte?

    The measurement of data storage capacity is in gigabytes. 1,000,000,000 bytes, or one billion bytes, make up one gigabyte. Data storage capacity is measured in terms of bytes. Eight bits make up one byte. The amount of data that can be stored in one bit. 0.125 bytes make up one bit.

    What Is Megabyte?

    A megabyte is a unit of digital information that equals one million bytes of data. A byte is a unit of information that equals eight bits, or two nibbles. A nibble is a unit of information that equals four bits. A bit is the smallest unit of digital information and equals either a 0 or a 1.

    What Is Gigabyte?

    A gigabyte, or one billion bytes, is a measurement of digital data. The size of computer files and the volume of data that can be kept on digital devices are measured using this unit. The word giga, which in the International System of Units implies "one billion," is where the term "gigabyte" originates (SI). Eight bits can fit into a single byte, making a gigabyte equal to one billion bits. A gibibyte (GiB), a more precise measurement of a gigabyte that recognizes that a byte is not always eight bits, is another name for the unit that is occasionally used.

    The first thing about gigabytes to realize is that they are a type of measurement. The term "gigabyte" refers to the size of a file or data set rather than a specific amount of bytes. Due to the fact that one gigabyte is equal to one billion bytes, the number is frequently shortened as "GB."

    Digital information is stored in units called bytes, which typically have eight bits each. The vast majority of computers employ an eight-bit byte, and this is the situation with them. Some systems, though, employ a different amount of bits per byte.
    A six-bit byte is used, for instance, by the IBM System/360, while a nine-bit byte is used by the System/370. A few 12-bit and 16-bit byte systems are also present.

    To put it simply, a gigabyte is a unit of measurement that equals one billion bytes. It is used to express the size of a file or data set. A byte is a unit of digital information that most commonly consists of eight bits.

    Examples of Megabyte and Gigabyte

    It's crucial to understand the distinction between gigabytes and megabytes when it comes to understanding digital storage. In essence, a gigabyte is a measurement equivalent to 1,000,000,000 bytes, whereas a megabyte is a measurement equal to 1,000,000 bytes.

    Examples of megabytes and gigabytes are as follows:

    A megabyte (MB) is a million bytes.
    1,000,000,000 bytes make up a gigabit (GB).

    Here are some examples to help you understand how large certain units of measurement are:
    equal to 1 MB are:
    • One megabyte (KB)
    • One million characters and one million bytes
    equal to 1 GB are:
    • 1,000,000,000 bytes; about 1 billion characters; 1,000 megabytes

    As you can see, very huge volumes of data are measured in megabytes and gigabytes. Megabytes and gigabytes are units of measurement for the size of items like photographs, videos, and music when it comes to digital storage.
    It's crucial to keep in mind that 1 MB is equivalent to 1,000 KB, and 1 GB is equivalent to 1,000 MB while working with megabytes and gigabytes. As a result, 1 GB is equivalent to 1,000,000 KB.

      Orders of magnitude of 1000 are rarely used in binary units like bits and bytes. Most of the time, 2^10 is used, or 1024. Basically the only exception is in sales of storage devices, where they take advantage of the ambiguity.

    1,024. It's not 1,000 because it's derived from base two, not base ten, and marketers are very, very lazy. This also means that those "1 terabyte" hard drives don't actually have 1 terabyte of capacity; usually it's just 1,000 gigabytes. Yes, that's false advertising. No, no one but me seems to care.

    For each level storage measure of memory you add a 1000. Starting at a the byte (a bit is the smallest measure and it is 1/8th of a byte) so from the byte to the kilobyte is 1000 bytes. So add a 1000 to the kilobyte. So there are 1000 kilobytes in the megabyte. Then repeat from the megabyte to the Gigabyte. So 1000 megabytes in a Gigabyte. The just repeat the process as you go up to the next level of memory storage Gb to terabyte and so on.

    1000 if byte. Though people tend to mix it up with 1024. 1000Mb = 1Gb

    It's different if using bit which is 1/8 of a byte. 1024 MiB = 1GiB (sometimes people use MB and GB but it's confusing)

    its always 1024.

    2¹⁰ = 1024

    1 byte is 8 bits

    Kilobiten is 1024 byte
    MB is 1024 KB
    GB is 1024 MB
    Terrabyte is 1024 GB
    and so on.

      I honestly have no idea! Here's what, don't check the opinion owner's profile, check the Asker's (in this case, piano's) and take a look at all of his questions. I reckon everyone of them's got that suspicious long reply With bold text, and Headlines. The first time I see replies of that nature from multiple accounts, to few specific askers. I mean, call me paranoid or whatever lol! But feel free to call these some damning evidence as well.

    1000 gb in a terabyte
    And I’m lost after this. There is a word for 1000 terabytes…petabyte? Something like that.
