What are your recommendations for new laptops?

My Lenovo Legion Y520 casing is pretty badly damaged. It's also 5 years old and I probably need to upgrade soon anyway. I think maybe I want a similar but even better computer. I paid $800 for this. I'm willing to pay twice as much for my next computer.

Depends what you're doing. If its still the same things, then stick with it for another year as the newer GPU's and processors are going to be released later in the year and the current stuff will get a good price drop.

If you're looking at $1,600 you'll want to buy a used laptop to get as much power for that money as possible. Look on eBay and Amazon for their certified refurbished laptops around 2 years old. They mostly come from liquidation companies and have hardly been used. You'll probably find a laptop that would run $3,000 new for the price you want.

You don't need to buy used or refurbished to get a decent laptop for that price. By going new you get a warranty and a depending where it was purchased from a good return policy.

The only issue is sometimes I play games , so having some decent gaming capability would be nice

Why type of games do you play? The 5700u's built in graphics isn't too bad a gaming, but if you want a little extra gaming performance, here is another option.

Stuff like total war or age of empires. I’m not gonna play anything insanely demanding on a laptop. One day if the star Citizen game turned out to not be a scam I’ll get a desktop for that.

5700u will play total war, but don't expect high FPS and quality settings, you'll average around 30fps on low to mid settings. In my opinion, I'd spend the a little and get the Lenovo with the withe 5800h paired with 3050ti, you get a dedicated gpu plus you get zen 3 cores instead of zen 2 which perform slightly better at gaming.
