I just got a new phone and I was wondering, if I go abroad and want to text my friends and family in the U. S., but I don't purchase a local sim card, will I have to punch the U. S. calling code to contact them or not. Because I'm looking at my old phone, and it just has the Area Code without the +1 in front of it and it was working fine before. So I'm not sure if the calling code is needed if my phone is registered in the U. S.
I occasionally need to get a hold of people at work when I'm abroad, so should I just save their number with the U. S. calling code, or will I be able to get a hold of them fine without it?

When i travel, my situation is a little different but a local sim card is often the easiest and cheapest way to go. It really depends upon your cell phone carrier plan. International communication can put you in the poor house if you are not careful. It is cheaper for me to pay in the Plan upfront than maneuver Roaming and International fees.
It probably won't work. You either need a local sim or have roaming enabled by your service provider.
Calling cards are a rip off.
