How to deal with people talking badly about you on the Internet?

Specially when it's people you know and that think they know the situation that they are talking about (they don't).

People on the Internet are more mischievous than good I think. They like drama and juicy details about others, they want to exploit or take advantage of your weaknesses, and they love pretending they know all about you but don't. Unless they actually do know you in real life, but 98% of the time somebody online has no idea who you are and what your life is like, but they would love to expose you if they could.

If you also notice, most people on the Internet, and especially on sites like GaG or reddit, are not actually saying anything worthwhile to help someone or offer any real value in their words. Most people are just trying to be the first to say something sarcastic, comedically irrelevant, or say something unkind to others and hope their comments will get lots of likes and be noticed. Clique-dom and social hierarchy exist online no less than in real life.

In cases like your question, I think you should absolutely block whoever is talking badly about you. I think blocking people at random is stupid and I do it extremely rarely, but when someone is coming against you, definitely do it. Because those are the people who have menacing and malicious intent towards you, and as I said earlier they would love to expose you if they could. Protect yourself and your peace however you should.

I had people spreading false rumors about me before. Here is my take. Distance yourself as far as possible from those people, even completely remove them from your life if it's not inconvenient to do so. Make one or two comments defending yourself, and if they continue hating then just let them do their thing and completely block / ignore them. Leave any community you are mutually a part of so you don't hear their bad comments, invite any true friends to leave with you (their choice). Leave the other crabs in the bucket while you escape to your freedom.

When you have no more notifications coming in about negative things, it's funny how easily you can ignore them and just do your own thing. So remove anything that brings back those notifications.

Alternatively, if you are the one in the wrong, admit you did something wrong, and try to change. If you apologize people are often willing to let go. But never apologize unless you actually did something wrong.

Finally, the internet is not everything. Go outside and you'll see that people are usually not so quick to attack others verbally. The internet can bring out the worst in many people.

I don’t think I’d care too much. Odds are i would probably not see it anyways. But maybe if they posted it on Facebook and it was 2007 still my feelings would have been hurt.

Tell it to shove it where the sun don’t shy. I know it sometimes sucks when people take bad things online. Especially if it’s not true. But you mustn’t show them it bothers you otherwise they’ll keep doing it.
