Most automobile insurance companies cover you to operate a rental car. However, if you do not take out the extra $13 per day as coverage through the rental company then you have to file a claim through your insurance company. If your insurance company does not cover you to operate a rental car then you are liable for those damages. I used to work for our state's DMV. I would see judgments that rental car companies had filed for damages. The largest amount I ever saw was for $300K where someone totalled a Bentley.
It was Europe and lot more. Our card company says they provide rental coverage … so will find out. Could be expensive!
In most European countries car rentals or obliged to full 'Auto Casco insurance' (AC) that covers hail damage. I wouldn't worry.
In EU there are mostly three types of car insurances.
basic - obligatory insurance for all vehicles that covers accidents and damages on persons and other vehicles you damaged (but not your damages)
partial Auto Casco - hail damage, stone damage on glass, vandalism etc... but it excludes damages on your car and car thievery
full Auto Casco - like partial AC but includes repairs on your car even if an accident was your fault and when your car get stolen you get some percentage of car value back.
Full AC is expensive, it costs around 1,5-3k USD annually + basic insurance. However car rentals and leasing agencies are obliged to this full AC insurance.
My credit card offers primary insurance coverage. I didn't deal with any of it.
I never had to deal with this. Maybe you should drive it off a peir and report it stolen
Worse:)
