When did the term "redacted" become part of our lexicon? Every time I hear it I wince, or get a little nauseated?

I first heard Morgan Freeman use the word in the movie "RED", with Bruce Willis, when looking at some government documents. Now anytime I see or hear something about something being 'deleted', lined out, or other wise done away with, they use the term redacted'. Dictionary gives alternatives of simply: "deleted', 'erased', 'removed' 'censored'

It just sounds like someone trying to be a 'techie' but doesn't know how?

It has always been a legal term for blacking out confidential parts of documents, usually ordered by judges in discovery. Movies & TV and political scandals made it a common word.

Thanks for your input, as it did seem to me to be a 'legal' term rather that some term used in everyday conversation. Now it seems commonplace to hear it used.

I don't like the word either. I guess they got tired of using the other words. I don't pay any attention to it
