What are the cons of being a software developer?

Very Painful back pain (spinal hernia)

Eye pain (prolonged and uninterrupted screen time). I am at the point in my life I would quit a job, that would not excuse me taking breaks from my prolonged screentime. Or getting dizzy from it. Not worth it!

Headache (unhealthy long hours desk sitting job)

Not making that much (more) money. I expected to drive a Ferrari by now but I sleep on a mattress on the floor while having 8 years of experience.

Memories? You'll contract amnesia. Remembering software, code, frameworks, tools, libraries, code tricks and shenanigans... it will reformat your brain and make you forget a ton. You trade your memory for IT stuff and I personally feel like my brain is not really my own anymore.

Learning IT and how to code stuff and what some code solutions do? You'll feel like you want to accomplish something and have the ambitions to but the developers, that post their working (or outdated or non-working) code don't bother to explain things or will leave many gaps, leaving you with code, that you don't understand but it either works or doesn't even work. You'll grow a resentment for these show-off developers. Which would give you the idea of keeping an archive with your own working code for the future and to reuse your working code the next time you need it. And this archive can grow quite enormous as you gain more experience.

Men especially tend to develop social ineptitude and turn unkempt and physically unattractive diving deeper and deeper into Software development. If they won't get aware of it and act accordingly, they'll be... ugly and unattractive. And as socially inept as the women are in dating. Horrific!

I can't really complain however. Working in home office has quite it's unique perks, that I relish and am grateful for.

Sitting for long periods.

Eyestrain.

Most such jobs aren't the best social situations. You may be working from home, or you sit in a room and stare at a display all day next to a bunch of aspy folk.

The market can be cyclical and if you're not careful in your choice of employer they may dump a bunch of you with little notice. If you work on government contracts, the political winds may dry them up. If you don't, you may find your job outsourced to Mumbai.

That said, I've had some very good jobs that were sometimes quite interesting, and made some good friends there.
