Image quality was going way up, and now it's shooting back down again. I'll use one CGI woman as a case in point.

In 2022, this was the best Kayla Tarington (from Volkonir) render I could get, using Wonder. Not very satisfying.

By 2023, this was possible with Wonder.

Then along came Krea, where it was (until recently) possible to get this level of quality.

Then, seemingly overnight, Krea got worse.

JPG artifacts notwithstanding, this is pretty much how she's supposed to look, pre-upscaling.

The upscaler now produces this mess of hideousness.

With Photoshop, it's possible to fuse pixels from both, to produce a compromise that's... decent.

However, when you prompt for 2048 resolution, and it promises that output... it automatically bumps you back down to 1024, and denies you the 2048 that you advocated, in spite promising to deliver 2048.

Also, women that should look fresh out of college and still young and vibrant now look like they're in their mid-40s.

I've noticed this with a few AI platforms. The only one that still seems to be genuinely improving beyond a certain plateau, is Bing. And that one is infamous for its heavy censorship and false positives for objectionable content.

Part of the push toward AI was to get away from bait-and-switch games!

Models agreeing to work with you for the sake of art, then trying to hijack your entire operation to proselytize their woke politics. Games letting you use the game for UGC to make almost anything, then suddenly making you sign licensing deals that make it illegal for you to profit anything, then taking features away you once had, and hiding them behind pay walls and subscriptions. And banning you for mods that don't adhere to "the Message."

Seems we can never truly have nice things.
