Life used to be slow and magical. Now it’s like too fast and mind blowing.

Better. Without it, I'd have to consult a Thomas Guide for directions or MapQuest it ahead of time. If there's unforeseen construction, road block or accident, I wouldn't know about it till right then and there.

If I wanted to look something up and I wasn't in front of a desktop computer or laptop, I can just press the Internet Explorer/Microsoft Edge, Google or Safari application and wala, I'm already reading the answers to my very pressing questions!

If I wanted to make a call, I can just do it right then and there in my car. No more needed to have a car phone (like the rich did back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, etc.). Nor would I need to stop at a Payphone to do it or go to a random person's house or call box. If you're in a terrible car wreck and your body is crushed between the dashboard and driver's seat, and you're able to still reach into your purse and dial 911. It's been a "Godsend" to say the least.

Of course people are more connected now and you see breaking news about someone's sentencing or about an earthquake in Maiami or tornado in Wisconsin. But other than that, if you could stave off your addiction to social media, I think it's been one of the greatest inventions in the world. It's basically a handheld computer.

WORSE if people choose to still be stupid with a smartphone. Misusing, harmful social media contents, posting things that should be private or should not go VIRAL without permissions

Worse. Laptops were bad enough. I don't understand why humans have this craving for getting information  faster , instead of  accurate. 
 
 I miss books.  Giles, the librarian/watcher in Buffy said his issue with computers was the smell - they don't have one. Knowledge should be more  tangible,  engaging all the senses if possible. I buy ebooks out of need - my house isn't big enough. But when I do, I try to get the Kindle version that has an Audible edition linked so that when I'm reading it I'm  hearing  it as well - the author if possible - and I have something with a strong scent close by as well so there's a memory association. As an Englishman I almost always have either a good cup of tea or a decent homebrew cider as well. The only sense not fully engaged - ironically - is  touch.

Totally with you. I’d maybe even extend that to mobile phones in general.

One thing that’s very important to me to maintain in my life is that I only deal with people at times when I’m good and ready to deal with them. The cellphone has ushered in this new era of expectations of your availability to others, and people really no longer respect your own personal timetable. This is especially true with work relationships, but personal ones too. I really miss only having a house phone, either being out all day or maybe not and just not picking up the phone, and then when I’M ready, I call you back, and there’s no “There’s NO WAY you didn’t see that I called/texted you all those times.” People really expect you to live your life for people other than yourself these days, and that’s just WILD to me.

overall worse, they are convenient but there are so many social problems caused by them.

we will need regulations to change how we use them to keep the conveience but remove the social problems.

* make it illegal to own or operate a smart phone under 21
* outlaw large scale centralized social media websites like facebook and instagram
* establish a digital bill of rights online

As for me I would have to say that things got worse in a lot of ways but on the other hand smartphones have helped people out as well.

I just got a smartphone a year ago. I guess it has been helpful. I use it a lot at work and I look at GaG during the day. U can check my email and text my wife. i have used the camera a lot and I use it at the gym to stream music.

It has certainly allowed manners to go down the drain. Dead calls - no pick-ups, etc. Before, a phone call was a GOOD thing. Now, it's more likely to be someone selling insurance or grave plots.
