No. It is actually largely meaningless these days. But manufacturers know people see "big numbers" and think something is better as a result - even if it's not.
A 48MP camera just tells you it can capture up to a resolution of 8000 x 6000. But if the sensor is crap, or aperture and the software processing etc isn't very good, then you're effectively capturing 8000 x 6000 of shit.
Hence better off with a 32MP that has quality and clarity instead.
This is why getting a "camera phone" means something different for those looking to use the phone for photography.

megapixels are just a meaningless number. all that it says is how many pixels the resulting pictures will contain of. it doesn't say anything about the quality. like a 12 megapixel professional cameras will give you pictures that are orders of magnitude superior to a 48 mp phone cams. and even the phone cams that have 48mp will vary vastly in quality.
it's pretty much a marketing number, cause marketing people like to abuse the lack of knowledge of laymen. if you don't know much about technology or photography, you'll think a higher number is generally better but that's abolutely not true.
