Someone can find you on social media just by searching your name, no interaction involved. Giving someone your phone number means it was a two-sided interaction, and that one of you was clearly interested enough to risk rejection on the spot. Social media has more information, sure, but giving someone your number shows intent.
The fact that this even needs explaining is another example of why modern society is doomed.
