Yes, in computer terms, it's a dinosaur.

On one hand, it's TRUE that the pace of both hardware and software "horsepower" needs have slowed down, compared to the rapid advancement of both in the early 2000s.

It used to be that if you bought near the top (something like an i7) today, you would get 5 years out of it, and if you bought near the bottom (like an i3), you'd only expect 3-4 years out of it, because software needs were growing so quickly that anything less would run too poorly.

Today, I think it's reasonable to use an i7 for 7-8 years, and an i3 for a max of 5-6 years, because software needs just aren't growing all that fast outside a handful of very resource-heavy tasks (high-end 3D games, 3D animation, video editing, etc.). But even that much more generous time frame means that a 17-year old CPU is ancient and would run VERY slowly even doing relatively light work. And if you are still running Win7, which hasn't had security patches for nearly a decade, you are incredibly vulnerable to being hacked, and there's a good chance that you'd never even be aware of it.

If you're going to play modern games, hell yeah. If you're just going to replay your classics, it's all good. If it's not even a gaming rig, and you're just going to use it for Internet, then it really shouldn't matter. Just don't upgrade to the latest windows version. it'll bog down all of its resources and barely function.

Don't upgrade your HP stream to Windows 11, most likely won't install and if it does, it will be painfully slow. If it were me, I'd install a lightweight Linux distro.

Yes it is 17 years old but it may still be usable if you upgrade the ram and buy a solid state drive. You may even be able to install windows 11 on it. There is a program called rufus and it can create a windows 11 bootable usb flash driving bypassing the tpm requirements and allowing it to install on older systems.

    Keep it by all means.

What they produce nowadays isn't meant to last. Especially with all this Chinese made crap in them.

However... ''inside'' you can always add or replace stuff. Some bastard greedy software just wants you to buy and consume.

Modern extra ''performance'' is in the range of milliseconds - not felt at all.

No, it's not even 20 years old. I've got an old laptop from the early `80's that still works fine and another desktop from the late `80's that also still works fine. The one I'm on now is at least 10 or 15 years old.

The core i-3 came out in 2007. You could easily get by with that for most stuff if you upgraded your graphics card and memory over it's life and maybe overclocked your CPU. Pretty much everything would work fine with minor exceptions.

An i-3 with 16 GB of RAM and a decent graphic card will run pretty much all modern software with the exception of some very poorly optimized video games. Most of the work these days isn't put on the processor, it's put on the graphic card. So minor upgrades can generally keep a computer from the late 2000s to early 2010s going even today.

Like I said, if you slap a new graphic card in and an a couple memory sticks it probably could do what it's used for. That said a new motherboard and processor every couple of decades doesn't hurt either.

Actually that false, the Core i3 didn't come out till 2010. In 2007, Intel was still on their core 2 line of processors, and some manufactures were still shipping systems with Celeron D's (I know, I got one for Christmas).

@llorandoo Yep you're right the naming convention for the architecture was released to the public in 2008 for the i3/i5/i7 and processors were released to the public for commercial consumption in 2010.

That is pretty old for a computer but maybe not like dinosaur age. If you still have to turn it on from the pack and your monitor is not a flat screen that’s pretty old. If the computer was made before 2000 you got a dinosaur computer.

No, it's considered old, but not dinosaur old. Depending on the system, a system is still useable for simple tasks like email and web browsing. I still have a core 2 duo system with XP from 2006 I still use for retro gaming system.

And he'd be wrong. If he was talking about an Altair 8080, then yes you could consider it a dinosaur, but not a computer from 2007.
