Would you try to fix this yourself, and if so, how would you do it? If you couldn't fix it yourself, what would you do?

Oddly enough, nobody mentioned the video card and that has been the culprit for me several times. I finally bought an expensive but reliable video card that actually works a lot better anyway. For gaming, a good video card is essential.

Is the computer really powered up? Check the screen is on (power LED: is it on/green?). Check the cable to the screen. Try a different video source with the same cable (Bluray player, video game console, something like that). Try connecting your computer to another screen (e. g. a TV).

Listen to the computer to hear if the fan or disc (if it's old enough to have one) is spinning. Check to see if the keyboard is showing signs of life. (Does the caps lock light come on when you toggle the button? Did it come on when you powered on the computer?).

Try to get into the BIOS. Boot a different OS from a external disc. So on, and so forth.

I would assume a toasted drive, which I could only exchange, but not actually repair.

You might be able to recover stuff off the drive if you have to.

I had something like that happen once and the solution was to boot in safe mode, and create a new user profile, and it wasn't affected by whatever had infected my regular user profile. Then I was able to go into the most recent files and delete some kind of worm that had caused my screen to lock. So that would be what I'd try first, and if that didn't work, I'd have to go find my college friend who knows computers a million times better than I do and see what he said.

Call one of my friends who knows more about computers and ask them what to do. If nothing can be done then save it for the next time I go out to the desert and introduce it to my Winchester model 1300

I can usually fix most of my computer problems, if not I have a friend in the computer troubleshooting business so I just ask him for assistance.
