Actually my first thought is always the cool accents.
I already figured this but its still cool to see it explained to people who don't know.

When I see "South Africa", I'm picturing a raped girl, gangs in the Soweto, and robbery.
Nope. I just think of the increadable racism of apartheid.

Yeah, well the current government is worse. They are corrupt and they originated from a pro-communist terrorist group. At least under apartheid there was rule of law for everyone. Apartheid wasn't good, but giving power to Mandela was a terrible move. They should have slowly transitioned to a fairer society with more moderate African nationalists.
And my personal favorite, "But, I thought Africa was a country."
Once the white people gave up apartheid, the place went to shit.

I don't conjure up any images when I think of South Africa. Not everyone thinks the same way. Assumptions are a two-way street.
I have been to South Africa (Cape Town) and its beautiful !! Most of the people are friendly and nice.
