1.1K opinions shared on Travel topic. The Ottoman Empire is the reason.
Under Ottoman rule, non-Muslims paid additional taxes, so there was a financial incentive to convert. This was most pronounced in the modern day territories of Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Greece.
Additionally, there was a lot of Turkish immigration into some of these places, particularly Bulgaria, Macedonia and Greece. Bosnia and Albania's Muslim population came more as a result of conversion, though.
As the Ottoman Empire was driven back, the Muslims were progressively expelled. The Population Exchange between Greece and Turkey of 1923 is but the most well known example of this. For example, until the early twentieth century, the demographics of the island of Crete, closely resembled those of Cyprus, with a Muslim minority of about 20 - 25%. The island is now entirely Orthodox Christian and Greek speaking. Bulgaria didn't quite get around to this, because it incorporated the formerly Ottoman province of Eastern Roumelia quite late, hence the rather large Turkish minority that is still present there.
Bosnia and Albania avoided this for different reasons.
Bosnia was under Turkish rule until 1878, and following that time, it became a nominally Ottoman possession under Habsburg administration. The Habsburgs didn't drive out the Muslims.
Albania remained an Ottoman possession until 1912, and ceased to be such, largely because Greece had seized territory connecting it to the rest of Ottoman Europe. By then it was majority Muslim, so there was no prospect of expulsion, as was the case in most other countries.
There weren't a lot of Turkish settlers in Romania, although, even today, you will see mosques in Romanian coastal villages. But the Islamic influence was far, far less. People like Vlad the Impaler may have had something to do with that.29 Reply- +1 y
@ChocoLada I haven't forgotten them as such, but I deemed them to be not as relevant to the question. All of those places were the wild west to the Turks, who didn't settle there in any great numbers. I know there are Muslim villages in parts of Montenegro, because I've been in them, but for the most part, any Muslim settlement was very much behind walls in towns. They weren't really 'settled' in those areas in the same way.
- +1 y
Well it is relevanr because they had to conquer Serbia first, in order to reach Bosnia.
Of course they haven't settled in Montenegro, because we were fighting against them, but they have settled in Serbia (Sanjak of Novi Pazar), and in Bulgaria (Pomaks).
They were stopped in Croatia (Sisak), and in Austria (Vienna) - by the Polish army. - +1 y
@ChocoLada This is all true, but it's not really relevant to the question.
The Sandjak of Novi Pazar is Serbian territory now, but it's not that dissimilar to Bosnia, in terms of its ethnic make up. Lots of battles were fought in Serbia between the Serbs and the Ottomans, but there wasn't a lot of Islamic settlement there.
None of those places were regions in which Muslims settled as farmers etc. They were far more urban, living in settlements where Christians were often not permitted to be, after dark. - +1 y
LoL, but it is relevant, because the Turks wouldn't be able to Islamize Bosnia without conquering Serbia first.
Besides that, there was only one crucial battle in Serbia, and that was The Battle of Kosovo, in 1389. After that, Serbia was ruled by the Turks for about 500 years.
Muslims have settled as farmers in Sandjak of Novi Pazar , I've been there, and I wouldn't be surprised if they get independence, just like Kosovo.

@ChocoLada With respect, the question was 'How did Bosnia and Albania become Muslim countries?', not 'Which Balkan countries fell under the control of the Ottoman Empire?'. @ZeussLightningbolt then asked some other respondents why Greece and Romania were not also Muslim majority countries, if Albania and Bosnia were ie. what were the conditions that allowed Islam to flourish in those two, and not others.
So I didn't forget about the Turkish conquest of Serbia, Romania and more than half of Hungary. I just decided it wasn't relevant to the answer.
You're correct about Kosovo Polje being the most important battle in Serbia. But there were others, too. It's just that the wrong side won. You may have visited the Ћеле Кула outside Nis. That's a lasting monument to Ottoman barbarity in the Balkans of a surprisingly recent vintage.
I agree with you about the Sandjak, as I said, it's not that dissimilar to Bosnia, in terms of its ethnic make up. Should Balkan borders shift again, I could also see that ending up in either Kosovo or Bosnia.
I've just seen you also answered the question, below, and it's a very good answer. I tend not to include those levels of detail on G@G, because it just doesn't mean a great deal to most people. Very few on here would have heard of the Bogomils, for example. - +1 y
Yeah, the question was "How did Bosnia and Albania become Muslim countries?"
@ZeussLightningbolt didn't ask about Greece and Romania in the question (you mentioned them in your answer before he asked you about them).
You also mentioned Bulgaria and Macedonia, but he never asked about them either.
Do you have something against Bulgaria and Macedonia?
After the Battle of Kosovo, Serbia surrendered, they never resisted against Turks until Russians started helping them - the first Serbian uprising against Turks was in the beginning of the 19th century (almost 5 centuries after the Battle of Kosovo).
Well, Sanjak would probably end up in Bosnia, they are Slavic Muslims, not Albanians.
Thank you, I'm glad you like my answer, yup, most people (especially in America) never heard about Bogomils ;)

I see a lot of people say Ottoman Empire. The ottomans are turks and turks are not real muslims they are if anything the most atheist like muslim race so why would they promote islam? They didn’t ottomans cared about control not religion. Is see other morons talking about arabs who are again one of the least muslim like race alive I mean a majority of them drink alcohol tbh I take it back arabs are the most atheist like race 2nd to turkey. Arabs like their own religion make it up as they go along then call it Islam.
The simple answer is this when people need faith they turn to the religion they want or see that was Islam and then it became “main stream” in schools probably or parents maybe taught it and hence it became a now muslim country.00 Reply
Turks invaded Europe in the 14th century, and started conquering Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania and Bosnia.
They also attacked Montenegro, Croatia and Hungary, but they didn't manage to completely occupy them.
Albania is a secular country, there are lots of Atheists too, but most of the population are Muslims - about 58.79% (56.70% are Sunni Muslims and 2,09% are Bektashi Muslims).
Islam in Albania appeared in 15th century, it was imposed by the Turks (mostly by force).
Before that, most of the Albanians were Orthodox Christians.
There are still several Christian communities in Albania (both Orthodox and Catholic, and even a small minority of Protestants).
In Bosnia, before the Turks, most of the Bosnians were Bogomils by religion (Gnostic/Dualist Christians).
Bosnian Bogomil Church was under constant attacks of the Catholic church, as well as Serbian Orthodox church. Bogomils were presecuted as "heretics".
That's why most of the Bosnians after the Turkish conquest willingly accepted Islam, just to spite the Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
Besides Bosnia and Albania, there are also several Muslim comunities in Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Montengro.
In these countries, lots of people accepted Islam because of the:
1. Lower taxes for the Muslims.
2. Muslims were free of "the right of the first night" (Turkish noblemen had a right to have sex with Christian women on their wedding night).
3. Muslims were not obligated to give "Devshirme" - Tribute in blood (Turkish military officers were taking Christian boys, ages 8 to 18, from their families, in order to be raised to serve the Ottoman empire as Janissaries).34 Reply- +1 y

Every other religion fled to avoid persecution. Look at the boku Hiram in Africa, if you're not Muslim they burn the male children and sell the females at any school they come across.

Yes Bosnia and Kosovo are majority Muslim. I think Albanians are "ethnically" Muslim, but the government "politely suggests" that everyone be secular.
