+1 yI would like to say my own M4, however one of Wacky Race Mobiles would be more accurate lol.

But in reality it would be one of these lol.

Fun fact, the car and the motor were so fast they were banned from NASCAR because it was an unfair advantage. It was the first car to break the 200 MPH barrier in NASCAR and they made a slightly detuned (emphasis on 'slightly') of the 426 HEMI for the street. Now very rare and very expensive.
Without googling, do you know why they called these engines, 'hemi's'? - +1 y
Domed pistons, hemispherical shaped for higher compression
- +1 y
@Likes2drive interesting
- +1 y
@Likes2drive Close, the type of pistons are irrelevant. The cylinder heads being shaped literally like have a sphere, like a ball cut in half is where the name came from.
And I am not demeaning your knowledge, just explaining it in a way everybody can understand.
As far as pistons are concerned, ideally flat topped pistons are ideal, for the hemispherical shaped heads to work optimally as intended. For the flame front to have optimal effect based on the head shape to create optimal cylinder pressure by design, the pistons should be flat. Unfortunately, because of the constraints of the valve sizes it's difficult to get high enough compression especially in large displacement engines, domed pistons are often used. It diminishes the intended designed effect a little, but without compression the engine won't run worth a crap.
I'd love to get my hands on an old hemi and design a popup, flat domed piston. It's probably been tried, but I haven't seen it. - +1 y
** half of a sphere...
- +1 y
Oh I knew about the Head shape with valves being close because the Pistons practically slam into it and just missing the valves. I think a Ford flathead would be interesting too
- +1 y
@Likes2drive I like the theory behind it, which was to center the the highest concentration of the force generated by the flame front directly on the center of the piston which is, at least theoretically speaking ideal. But it's really hard to make compression in true hemis and people use domed are valve relieved domed pistons to increase compression, but end up disturbing the actual idea behind the design. Of course, boost mitigates most of these issues, so if you are big into boost, swirl and fuel dissipation is far less evident.
And that's what I would like to see from the flat head. It's both such a bad and a good design at the same time. I would like to see a properly done boosted flathead. They have such low compression, that I have to imagine boost would be magical for it. Perhaps the blocks are too weak to do that. Anyway, I digress. I love talking engine dynamics. It's endlessly fascinating to me. - +1 y
Yeah it’s definitely interesting, what do you think about dual spark plugs in each cylinder? I’ve seen it with some Japanese motors to burn the unburned fuel from the combustion for emissions and also aircraft motors but that was more for a back up, maybe it could add horsepower too
- +1 y
@Likes2drive I think it’s a great idea, it gives two flame fronts and is more efficient. It also gives you more flexibility with timing. People have poo pooed ignition for a long time, but I think it’s one of my the great less explored actions in engine dynamics. Ferrari has been using it in various cars since the 50s. People are often surprised when spark plugs make more power, but when you think about ignition it makes sense. Fuel doesn’t burn instantly, it takes time, that’s why we advance timing. So the more fuel you can ignite at once the better and more complete the burn and the more control you have. It just suck to buy 16 spark plugs, but they last so long now it’s mitigated.
- +1 y
Yeah exactly, they should do that with most motors

Its a 1987 Buick GN X28. It has a 3.8 liter v6, turbo charged.. In that picture where i was at a drag strip it was making 1735 horses at the rear wheels. It topped out at 245 miles and hour, and did the quarter mile in just under 8 seconds. One of the fastest Buicks on the planet, and there were only 500 of these made.
