Is California worth living in?

Question

I am thinking of moving to a different state, and like this one as I have visited before. But is it as expensive as they say it is? I don't want Florida, as it's too humid. Tell me about your state, and why it is great to live in.

The only reason for me is because of who I am with. But under any other circumstance I would not be here. I've seen it, traveled it, it's pretty and all but their politics are ass end backwards, their police act like gestapo, and their politicians have gone around thinking they're untouchable for far too long. It's pretty crowded, housing here is outrageously high, taxes are insane, it's loud af here, and the other night a little heavy wind knocked out power to all of LA county almost and some parts south of here. And where I'm at cable, internet, and phone service are rather spotty and I am using Verizon by the way. The good things are the food, mild or non-existent Winters (in the south at least), the palm trees, and number of conveniences. Also I like getting booze from th grocery store to save time. That wasn't a thing where I was from before.

California is indeed a very expensive place to live. I relocated to Florida for that, as well as other reasons. Although California incomes appear attractively high, housing costs are among the highest in the nation. California also has very high taxes: income tax, sales tax, and property taxes, as well as motor vehicle and fuel taxes. Gasoline is at least $1 per gallon higher than most states, and that results in higher prices for food and other goods which are moved by truck. If you want to live in the San Francisco or San Francisco Bay area (everyone seems enamored by that region), your cost of living will be even higher.

Have a six-figure job lined up and you'll be fine with the move.

I like the weather and people swim with dolphins and food is good too. You can enjoy various culture food. But I am scared of earthquakes. I will not move there. Why don’t you move to Philippine. Maybe you should move to Greece.

Well if you don't like lots of traffic and lots of people, you might to stay away from Southern California. You can't really beat the weather if you like to spend a lot of time outdoors. Northern California is beautiful. The redwood forest and Sierra mountains are beautiful. Los Angeles and San Francisco are the bum capitols of the country (if you like homeless junkies). The central coast is almost deserted and beautiful, but expensive. The central valley doesn't have much going on besides farming. I live in Los Angeles county. There are mountains, deserts, and beaches all within an hour's drive. The people are not as open or willing to interact with you like East Coast people, and not as welcoming and friendly as Southern people. Everybody is in a hurry. San Diego area is kind of cool, too

Tennessee has some merit to it:

1. No state income tax. The only income tax you pay is federal.

2. There is something for everyone. If you want a very liberal place that is rundown and high crime, go to Memphis. If you want a big city but safe feel, move to Nashville. If you want some nature, East Tennessee is good. Memphis is VERY humid but the rest of Tennessee is manageable.

3. Nashville's airport is International so you can go overseas for vacation with less flights.

4. Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky and Mississippi are all very drivable within one day so it is not difficult to take a vacation away from home for fairly cheap.

5. Outside of Nashville housing is cheap.

6. Very gun-friendly state so you can actually protect yourself and have the law on your side.

7. If you have military or law-enforcement background we Tennesseeans will have nothing but respect for you.

I lived in Long Beach for a while, i liked it, but there were so many people.
I really like the state from Frisco and north.
There is a wide varity of people living there, but the state does have a lot of financial issues, and water issues in the south.
Depending on where you live you can be at 80 degrees, and in a couple of hours be snow sking.

It has always been expensive to live there, Now it is even more expensive. The taxes are among the most expensive in the country and property values are expensive despite the recent exodus to more conservative states.
I live in the northeast and it is almost as expensive to live there. My house is worth a million dollars and it is nothing special. The taxes are crazy here as well. My property taxes are my biggest expense. The weather sucks 7 months out of the year too.

California is maybe the best state in the nation. Offers amazing mountains, nature, beaches, weather and nightlife.

If you're going to move to L. A. or San Diego then you have to have a nice bank accounts because it's going to heavily cost you to live good out there.

Perhaps it's cheaper if you move to a more part of the state that's cheaper but you won't have the beaches and nightlife, but assuming at your age you aren't interested in the nightlife much.

Only if you can afford the housing. Also be aware while there is cheap property in California, the area may not be that great. Like any other state, there will also be super dangerous places filled with crime. Some parts of the state are also super different culturally and weather-wise.

There was decent house in Arizona that was only 700K in a good area accessible to businesses and schools. A very similar yet smaller house in California went for about 1.1 million in a less convenient area further from businesses. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it.

No. If you don't have to stay here due to having family already living here, I wouldn't recommend living in California at all.
If your listed age is correct and you are retired I would recommend looking into states with low income tax rates.

If you have a decent job and can afford to pay a lot in taxes, it’s not a bad place to live. If you’re not making a lot then you will pay a fortune to live in an unsafe area and pay $5/gallon to work a job and sit in traffic for hours.
