You are hiking in a place you've never been before and you come upon this, what do you do?

In 2019 I was hiking in a new area and this is what I came upon.

Um yeah this little thing is in the way

This is lower elevation desert hiking, not high elevation but still in the mountains. What would you do?

Get to work climbing down one side and up the other

Go the long way around to get to the other side

Time to call it quits, turn around and go back the way you came.

Would never come across it as I don't hike

To update what I did, is I did take this picture and some others, then I went back the way I came, so option C would of been what I did.

I had ridden my ATV part way up the mountain, then hiked two miles up to this point. Turned around, went back to my ATV then found a trail rode around to the other side and hiked some more. I wanted to hike it to make sure there was a actual trail to ride on, rather than break the law and make my own trail.

I do hybrid riding and hiking a lot, rather than multi day camping hiking trips. As this is give or take 18 to 20 miles from the base, trail head... would need several days to do it all on foot.

It depends on what kind of mining that what's going on there if it's copper is going to be sliding all the way down to the bottom and almost impossible to get back up if it's shell rock I wouldn't do that it also depends on who I'm with because that's the first thing I'm going to think of how long is it going to take this person to get down and get up the other side and I'm sure all the way there I would have been looking at rocks trying to figure out what it was I think I would just sit back and relax for a few minutes think about it but I don't think going down it would be wise like I said it just depends on who you with but it is beautiful

Take in the beauty of why I am there in the first place... Reflect and move on. If I had planed to stay the night then I would go down and maybe back up the other side today or in the morning. If I di not plan on staying the night then I would sit a while and then head back.

I hiked the two miles back to my ATV and then drove around it to the other side. Then continued hiking.

Well, I would just sit there for a while, and stare in awe at the majesty of nature, and of how no matter how “hot-shit” we may think we are, we can be dwarfed, just by some sedimentary rocks! Also, that no matter how big we believe our problems are… at the end of the day, or more specifically the end of our life, that rock face will still sit there, largely unchanged! It kinda puts life in perspective!

I would note this place on my map (I do cartography as a hobby sometimes so I would probably have a map on me) and then of course I would get myself kitted out to go down there again at some point then I would probably turn back because well I just discovered something interesting and would want to go back down there as soon as possible and by this point here I'm sure I'm out in the middle of the desert and it's probably best to go back home now

I usually stick to trails, so wherever that leads. Going off on your own is extremely dangerous and is linked to some very specific types of disappearances in the US.

Very true for others, I'm very experienced and hike all the time, including carrying a PLB and a couple of concealed weapons. I've never understood how someone can get lost 500 feet off a trail and think what were they thinking? if you have a poor sense of direction do not leave the trail.

I grew up in this kind of environment, and mountains so it is very easy for me.

It can be, but I grew up in this kind of environment so its not really dangerous for me. This and the mountains. Cities are harder for me as they seem way more dangerous and I did not grow up in them.

If I wanted to keep going, I'd hike around it. That type of terrain is not climbable. Loose dirt and nothing to grip onto. Nice area though! I love the desert.

Round trip it was about 4 miles, I had ridden my ATV to a point, then left it for the hike. Had a couple two liters of water in it, got to this point... took this picture, turned around went the 2 miles back, then rode around to the other side and did some more hiking.

You could say I hybrid hike, at least at this place cause to start from the base would of been 20+ miles from the trail head, no way to do that on foot without camping for several days.

Given that lower elevation desert can be hot and there are a lot of cliffs/ledges, I would go around. Lower chance of injury and less exhausting.
