Don't.

You're spending time and money to go to a new country. Spend some time and effort to learn at least a bit of rudimentary Japanese.

When's your trip? From now until then (and while you're there) download Duolingo and take Japanese. Watch shows with Japanese audio and English subtitles (any show, or better yet if you find one that talks about things you're interested in).

Going to another country without even trying to learn to communicate in that language is peak American Tourism. Don't be like that.

Also, Japanese people are pretty xenophobic. It's just the culture. Having some Japanese will smooth things over and at least shows you're making an effort.

Otherwise, you're gonna be labelled a dumb American.
