Accommodation in Canada - I'm planning to travel for a few months?

I'm planning to travel for a few months to Canada on visit visa. I would like to stay at a student accommodation as its safer and cheaper. I contacted a few and they are particular that your either a student or work locally. Would any of you know of student accommodations in Toronto & Edmonton that would take in a traveller. If not, any decent accommodation that's easy on the purse and not too poor on the facilities either?

There is one in Edmonton. Campus Tower Suite Hotel. It's owned by the university, but take tourists. But they're a bit on the expensive side.

I also found some university apartments in Toronto that rent out to tourists, but they have very bad reviews so I wouldn't recommend it.
