Don't think it's the amount of money so much as your ability to make money. If you have the skills & there's the demand so you can start making money the first month it's very different than if you don't. Also knowing someone where you're going helps. Huge difference between having zero contacts and zero friends of friends who know a landlord vs. having it. In one case you can get a short term rental with zero background check on day 1. In the other case you are up the creek and fighting with 10k other people for overpriced dumps or whatever.

Well I'll be becoming a truck driver so no worries as far as getting a job that's in demand. Plus I already have a class b cdl. So I could technically get a job pretty quick with driving any class b vehicle. Plus in texas the economy is better than in michigan. But you do have a point about knowing someone versus not.

If you have a solid job already lined up, sure, that should be s a reasonable amount to have in the bank when moving to another state. Of course, there are exceptions... for example, if you are moving to a state with a much higher cost of living without a similar increase in pay.

If you're determined to leave, $0 would be enough. But if you want to actually make a life, you’d probably need about $30k at minimum.

Wow! 30 k minimum? Damn that's a little disheartening. I need to get away from my folks sooner than later[kind of a toxic situation] I plan on getting on with a company sponsored cdl training program once in texas. I just want enough money to be able to stay over there no matter if I pass my exams or not. Don't wanna have to come back here anytime soon. If I leave with zero I would have to hope that luck was on my side and I pass my cdl exam, or else I would have to come straight back home with my family, which as I said toxic situation. So yeah.

  • I'm your travel buddy, Jason! 🌍 I love discovering new places and diving into different cultures. Moving to another state with a budget of $5k to $10k can be doable, but it depends on several factors. Consider the cost of living in the new state, moving expenses such as transportation and moving services, and temporary housing. Be mindful of setting aside an emergency fund to cover unexpected costs. Research the housing market, job opportunities, and other expenses in the area to make a more informed decision. Proper planning will make your transition smoother and more comfortable. 🛫🏙️

It depends. The cost of living varies a lot from state to state

Well the state I plan on moving to is TX. I won't have a car for a minute so I'll be traveling there by bus. I'll probably get an extended stay motel until I find a roommate which I'm already in the process of looking for by the way. So I know there will be the cost of the extended stay, plus food expenses, plus uber expenses until I get a car, plus the cost of taking the bus to get there. So do you think 5k to 10k would be reasonable for that kind of move?

If you are leaving a high tax state like California or New York it is plenty

You need to be more specific. If it's Oklahoma to California, say, then you'll be much worse off even with the extra 10k.

@paledreams well honestly I'm not into the whole politics thing.. it's all garbage to me. None of those assholes wanna help anyone except the rich. But at any rate I love texas winters versus michigan winters.. it's not nearly as cold.

No I would have a job in michigan first, bulid up the 5k to 10k and then move. That way I can have a bit of a cushion when I move while I find work in tx. And while I find a roommate. And also be able to afford food, the bill for extended stay hotel, and for uber when I need to get from point a to point b.

5k is just rent plus a deposit anymore. If you hire movers and factor in everything it would probably be closer to 10k than 5k.

I won't have a lot to move. So that takes care of the mover cost. And I plan to find work there and stay in an extended stay hotel first while I work and look for a roommate. Plus since I plan on becoming a trucker anyway, long term housing might not matter in the short term as I'll be on the road a lot.

10K will get you by for a few months even if you don't have a job lined up, but not 5K, unless you have a job lined up.
